- Responsible for short and long-term planning. Set direction of departmental goals to align with corporate objectives.
- Responsible for presenting departmental performance, strategies, corrective actions and recommendations to executive management.
- Approve annual departmental budget. Ensure adherence to departmental budget constraints.
- Overall responsibility to ensure that new development products are properly described and released.
- Direct the improvement and use of standard products as required.
- Provide overall direction for Engineering support activities.
- Foster a strong customer satisfaction commitment.
- Responsible for ensuring customers receive sound, valid engineering designs.
- Monitor and manage manpower forecast based upon project needs and business conditions.
- Train, motivate, and evaluate assigned employees to optimize their potential and productivity.
- Create, implement and monitor the development of programs for staff personnel.
- Review and implement necessary process changes as required to create a more efficient work environment.
- Ability to communicate directly with internal or external customers on contractual and technical issues.
- Coordinate with Marketing and Yaskawa Innovation to develop new product ideas based on market analysis and needs. Establish product development priorities to be presented to Executive management.
- Work with the Quality Group and Customer Satisfaction to identify products driving higher warranty costs. Institute measures to improve those products to decrease warranty costs in the future.
- Lead representative for Yaskawa America on Yaskawa Global Development Committee. Ensure Yaskawa GDA’s are completed on a timely and thorough basis. Persuade Yaskawa Electric to prioritize Yaskawa America development requests to the extent possible. Work to ensure global cooperation and consistency for Yaskawa hardware and software products.
- Lead local development of Global development projects. Ensure projects are clearly defined with Yaskawa’s parent company in Japan. Ensure that specifications and timelines are clearly understood by both organizations and that local development is completed to meet Yaskawa quality standards.
- Lead and approve local standard development projects. Ensure projects are clearly defined. Ensure that specifications and timelines are clearly understood by team members and that local development is completed to meet Yaskawa quality standards.
- Responsible to ensure that all Yaskawa products being sold by Yaskawa America comply with North American safety standards.
- Work with the Automation Group to ensure that both the Product Solutions Group and the Automation Group Engineering teams agree on Engineered / Re-Engineered solutions that intersect and / or are utilized by both organizations.
- Ensure that “redline” changes to standard products are made on a timely basis to help ensure improved efficiency and quality in meeting Yaskawa production and quality standards.
- Cooperate and coordinate with Yaskawa Innovation to ensure consistency in product development initiatives, product releases and process consistency.
- Tracks, edits, and manages all IP within Motoman, and report on updates and changes.
- Travel is required as needed, including international. A valid passport is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Carries out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, MBA preferred and eleven plus years related experience and / or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
Planning, coordination, training experience required. Possesses strong negotiation and conflict resolution skills, as well as presentation skills for reporting departmental performance to others including, but not limited to the executive staff. Ability to motivate staff. Has a solid technical foundation reinforced with a good understanding of business and legal issues. Have sound understanding of electrical hardware, controller, and mechanical and software systems.
Have a strong understanding of systems and a strong understanding of all automated processes along with application of those processes (i.e. welding, cutting, case packing, palletizing).
In-depth understanding of Sales / Marketing and Operations is desirable.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems with the goal of dealing with a variety of known / unknown variables and situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
