Systems Librarian - Library District (Prescott)

Role

Under minimal supervision, analyzes user requirements and business processes and subsequently designs and develops or provides assistance and recommendations in selecting software that meets the requirements of Yavapai County Libraries.

The Yavapai Library Network (YLN) currently utilizes the KOHA system.

Major Duties, Responsibilities

  • Participates in implementing, testing, maintaining, and enhancing the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS), discovery services (OPAC) and the YLN help desk ticket system.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and resolves technical issues related to the YLN.
  • Analyzes library applications in terms of systems and programming requirements; analyzes system and operational problems and prepares recommended solutions; works with users and other technical staff to develop written requirements and specifications for new and modified web-based and client-server applications.
  • Administers Linux servers and PHP, PERL, and shell scripts.
  • Website development including building custom CMS modules.
  • Develops custom (statistical) reports in support of the ILS as requested by management or member libraries.
  • Manages and supports other critical library services including configuration and maintenance of access and authentication software.
  • Develops and documents internal processes and procedures to support operations within the YLN.
  • Monitors industry trends and best practices related to information access and discovery and recommends improvements to existing tools and workflows. Investigates opportunities to automate library processes.
  • Collaborates with librarians and colleagues on committees and/or email groups to support library services.
  • Works directly with vendors to implement and apply vendor-supplied software and upgrades.
  • Creates and maintains system documentation.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Education

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree in Library Science, Computer Science, or related field.

Experience

Four years’ experience in library operations, library automation, and/or systems analysis work related to development of web-based and stand-alone applications. An equivalent combination of directly related work experience and education may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-per-year basis.

Additional Requirements

Must possess a valid Arizona driver’s license.

  • Library operations and the pertinent local and state government regulations that affect libraries

  • Maintain an enterprise-wide perspective on applications and systems.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other departments, representatives of other organizations, County officials, and the public.
  • Keep management informed of key operating issues affecting the department.
  • Handle confidential matters and maintain discretion always.
  • Act with courtesy, tact, and diplomacy.

Work Environment

The work environment is associated with an office and requires travel from site to site. The work area is adequately lighted, heated or cooled and ventilated.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and crawl under desks, and walk on uneven ground routinely. Sufficient vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech ability to communicate effective in-person and telephonically. Capable of frequent repetitive movement of arms, fingers, and wrists. Ability to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds.
