What are the responsibilities and job description for the Yellowstone Van Tour Guide position at Yellowstone Hiking Guides?
Day-long interpretive Van Tours to Yellowstone's iconic hot spots:
- Upper Loop (wildlife and hot springs)
- Lower Loop (geysers, hot springs and waterfalls)
- Up to 3 miles walking at high elevation
- Long days, early mornings
- 10-12 hours driving
- 3-5 days/week
Guides must share the same work/moral ethics Yellowstone Hiking Guides outlines in Guide School. We work hard for the entire season. We work cold snowy mornings. We work long, hot days. Responsibilities include:
- Leading engaging van tours through Yellowstone, providing informative commentary and ensuring a memorable experience for guests.
- Delivering exceptional customer service by addressing inquiries and accommodating diverse needs.
- Manage time effectively to adhere to tour schedules while ensuring safety and enjoyment.
- Utilize public speaking skills to communicate clearly and confidently with groups.
- Drive a 15-passenger van on mountain roads with up to 12 clients.
- Hike up to three miles on tour.
- Maintain Wilderness First Aid Certification to respond to emergencies and ensure guest safety.
The ideal candidates has the following qualifications:
- Wilderness First Aid or Responder (WFA can be obtained during YHG Guide School for a fee)
- Leave No Trace certificate (can be obtained during YHG Guide School)
- Certified Interpretive Guide (can be obtained during YHG Guide School)
- Previous guiding experience
- Ability to follow directions (and the YHG program)
- Ability to work solo shifts
- Ability to hike at high elevation
- Clean driving record
- Ability to drive 15 passenger van fully loaded on mountain roads
- Ability to live remotely
- 21-years-old or older
- Knowledge of Yellowstone National Park flora, fauna, and history
- Mountain travel safety skills (weather, water, wildlife, etc.)
- Morning person
- Dazzling personality; able to talk to and entertain people from all walks of life
- Ability to communicate in layman terms

We are a small family business. Unfortunately, we are not able to provide housing at this time. But, the Driftwaters RV Resort has great options for our employees! Dry camping spaces and travel trailer hookups are available. A shower/bath house is available. Driftwood Bar and Bistro restaurant onsite. Brown bag lunches and breakfast snack provided on workdays.
First Year Guides must complete YHG Guide School to secure employment (May 26-31, 2025)
YHG Guide School:
- $75/participant (plus certification fees for those without credentials)
- One week training program prior to employment
3 days in class
- YHG program
- Wilderness First Aid
- Certified Interpretive Guide
- Leave No Trace
- Food Handlers training
- Yellowstone National Park Guide Training Program (NPS)
3 days shadowing a lead guide in Yellowstone National Park
- YHG program (Upper Loop Wildlife Tour to Lamar Valley, Lower Loop Active Tour)
- Real life customer interactions/situations
Guide School is Pass/Fail. Guide School is evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Guide School is not paid training.
YHGS is pass/fail. Participants are examined on outdoor knowledge, naturalism, communication and teamwork.
Guides who complete the course have preferential employment opportunities. Guides who earn a position on the team will receive paid hands-on training with an experienced guide on the trail/on the road/on the water in Yellowstone before leading tours.
