What are the responsibilities and job description for the Per Diem Outdoor Educator position at YMCA Camp Ralph S. Mason?
General Function
This is a hands-on field position that directly involves teaching and leading groups of youngsters in outdoor, environmental and recreational activities at camp. Comfort in the outdoors is a must, you must be familiar with outdoor recreation and/or natural sciences, and capable of supervising and directing children entrusted in your care. Per diem Outdoor Educators must have demonstrable knowledge and/or expertise, sufficient to teach young children in some key curriculum subjects including but not limited to: ASE, belay techniques, rock climbing/rappelling, canoeing, boating, life guarding, water ecology, pioneering skills, forest ecology, colonial history/culture, crafts, peer counseling, orienteering and map skills, archery, riflery, group games, teambuilding, hiking or backpacking, wilderness survival, basic plant and animal identification and sciences. If skills and certification are not already possessed, they should be willing to take training in the team challenge/ASE program, interpretive nature hikes, belay, and curriculum information specific to the most common classes at YMCA Camp Mason. No violent crime related criminal convictions or charges pending and no chemical or drug dependencies. Clean drivers license a plus as are current life guarding, or any national instructor certifications.
Job Segments
As assigned, plan, prepare for, lead, and teach various activities in the outdoors, to groups of 6-25 youngsters, usually between the ages of 9 and 17.
Review assigned curriculum and feel free to make suggestions, improvements, or recommendations for additions, updates, and revisions that will improve the educational aspects.
Supervise outdoor recreation activities related to schools and youth groups who visit camp.
When using equipment, always perform safety checks and preventative care tasks before and after each use to insure no dangerous equipment will be used or returned to storage.
Assist and initiate creative ideas and projects for learning, demonstration, and interpretation of the natural environment. Add such expertise to your class regime to add your own unique aspects to your class.
On occasion, lead or assist hikes, camp-outs, or canoe or raft trips, subject to skills and training.
Help develop and seek out ideas for new program and activity areas, including rainy-day activities, specialty classes, and totally new and innovative curriculum.
Do what-so-ever is required to help camp staff to insure each school and each child experiences a positive, safe, and worthwhile learning and camping experience here at the Mason Outdoor Center.
Qualifications
Current CPR and First Aid Certifications from a nationally recognized certifying body are required. If you are not currently certified you can be added to the next certification class, or if you would prefer, arrange for your own certification before the start of the Outdoor Education season.
