General Function:
The Group Leader is responsible for guiding and supervising children in before/after school and summer programs, ensuring a safe and supportive environment, and assisting the program coordinator with day-to-day operations. This role includes organizing engaging activities, promoting a positive atmosphere, and building meaningful relationships with children, parents, and staff. The Group Leader plays a vital role in the program’s success by helping achieve its goals and fostering an enriching experience for all participants.

Know-How:

  • Education and Experience:
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; BSAC certification (provided if needed); EDU 119 preferred but not required
  • Prior experience working with children in group settings is preferred
  • Knowledge:
  • Understanding of child development principles and best practices for working with children
  • Knowledge of program safety and behavior management techniques
  • Familiarity with age-appropriate activities and educational materials
  • Skills:
  • Strong organizational and time-management abilities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to plan and implement engaging and educational activities
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills (email, word processing)
  • Abilities:
  • Capable of managing a group of children and ensuring their safety and well-being
  • Ability to adapt activities to meet the diverse needs of participants
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to address issues effectively
  • Collaborative team player with the ability to work seamlessly with staff and program stakeholders

Principal Activities:

  • Activity Planning and Implementation:
  • Plan and lead a variety of educational, recreational, and enrichment activities for children
  • Adapt activities for different age groups and individual needs
  • Ensure activities are engaging, age-appropriate, and aligned with program objectives
  • Supervision and Safety:
  • Supervise children at all times to ensure their safety and well-being
  • Enforce program rules and procedures to maintain a positive and secure environment
  • Address behavioral issues or conflicts promptly and professionally
  • Participant Engagement:
  • Build positive relationships with children and create an inclusive, supportive atmosphere
  • Encourage active participation in activities and provide individualized support as needed
  • Foster a sense of community and teamwork among children
  • Communication and Collaboration:
  • Maintain regular communication with the program coordinator regarding children’s progress and participation
  • Collaborate with fellow staff members to ensure cohesive program delivery
  • Provide constructive feedback to improve program activities and operations
  • Actively promote and advocate for YMCA programs
  • Record Keeping and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and other relevant information
  • Report concerns or incidents to program supervisors promptly
  • Assist with preparing reports and documentation as needed
  • Resource Management:
  • Assist with setting up and cleaning up program materials and spaces
  • Ensure efficient use of resources and report supply needs
  • Manage and distribute materials for activities
  • Training and Development:
  • Participate in required training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge
  • Attend monthly staff meetings
  • Support and mentor new or less experienced staff members as needed

Physical Requirements:
The Group Leader must represent the YMCA in a professional manner and be capable of freely maneuvering the grounds and facilities. The role requires clear communication and physical activity, including walking, stooping, carrying at least 50 lbs, sitting, standing, pushing, climbing, kneeling, and crouching.

Safety Policy:
The Group Leader is responsible for adhering to the following safety protocols:

  • No alcohol or drugs will be used on the job at any time.
  • Report all accidents on the same day they occur.
  • Obtain supervisor approval for non-emergency treatments for accidents.
  • Wear seat belts at all times in company vehicles.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Do not bypass any machinery guards at any time.
  • Seek supervisor assistance when additional equipment or instructions are needed for safe job performance.
  • Lift with your legs, not your back, and request assistance for loads over 50 lbs.
  • Notify your supervisor of any hazardous conditions.
  • Follow all written and verbal safety guidelines.

Introductory Period:
A 90-day review will be conducted following the employee’s start date to assess mutual satisfaction and job suitability for both the employee and the YMCA of Catawba Valley.
