TEEN CAMP COUNSELOR
General Function:
Do you have a passion for working with teenagers and creating memorable summer experiences? Join us as a Camp Counselor at Hickory Foundation YMCA. In this role, under the supervision of the Summer Camp Teen Director and the Summer Camp Coordinator and in accordance with the North Carolina licensing guidelines, you will play a vital role in fostering a positive and inclusive camp environment, guiding campers through exciting weekly themes filled with lessons and activities. The Summer Camp Counselor responsibilities include curriculum coordination, program development and growth, quality assurance, and NC licensing compliance, contributing to a memorable and enriching experience aligned with the YMCA's commitment to youth development.
General Responsibilities
Camp Activities and Supervision: Engage campers in a variety of age-appropriate and theme-related activities designed to enhance their skills, creativity, and teamwork. Ensure the safety and well-being of campers during all camp activities, outings, and free time.
Team Collaboration and Guidance: Work collaboratively with fellow Summer Camp Counselors, the Summer Camp Coordinator, and the Summer Camp Teen Director to ensure a cohesive and enriching camp experience. Provide support and positive guidance to campers, promoting a sense of belonging, confidence, and personal growth.
Training and Administrative Responsibilities: Participate in the mandatory training week during the week of May 20th to prepare for the upcoming camp season. Embrace and coordinate weekly camp themes, creating an immersive experience for campers with corresponding lessons and activities. Be adaptable and open to adjusting activities based on the needs and interests of campers, ensuring a dynamic and engaging camp environment. Assist in administrative duties such as attendance tracking, camper registrations, and documentation of daily activities.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Retaining a personal commitment to YMCA philosophy and the ability to implement values and education as role models.
- Assuring the health, safety, and welfare of the children in accordance with the YMCA of Catawba Valley policies and procedures.
- Record keeping: attendance, lesson plans, curriculum, equipment inventory.
- Facility cleanliness: bathrooms, cafeteria, gym, and other program areas.
- Work effectively with all staff and supervisors.
- Building and maintaining positive relationships with students and parents.
- Understanding and adhering to NC child care regulations.
Hourly Rate: This position offers a competitive hourly rate of $11-$12 for the 14-week camp duration.
Specific Requirements
- Must be a minimum of 18 with high school diploma or GED
- Positive and effective communication skills
- Willingness to attend leadership training and continued education
- CPR, First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens
- Current TB test, criminal background test, and fingerprints
- BSAC Training
- YMCA Child Abuse Training
Physical Requirements:
Including, but not limited to:
Walking, stooping, carrying a minimum of 50 lbs., sitting, standing, pushing, climbing, kneeling, lifting minimum of 50 lbs., and crouching.
Safety Policy:
The Summer Camp Counselor will be responsible for observing the following rules.
1. No alcohol or drugs will be used on the job at any time.
2. Report all job accidents the same day the accident happens.
3. Obtain authorization from your supervisor for all non-emergency treatments for accidents.
4. Wear seat belts at all times in company vehicles.
5. Keep the area where you work clean and neat at all times.
6. Do not remove or bypass any guards on any machinery at any time.
7. Ask your supervisor when you need additional equipment or instructions to get the job done safely.
8. Lift with your legs, not your back, and get assistance with loads over 50 pounds.
9. Advise your supervisor of any hazardous conditions.
10. Follow all other written and spoken safety rules.

The Summer Camp Counselor represents the YMCA in a professional, courteous, friendly, and helpful manner to program participants. This individual will provide a safe, clean, caring environment in accordance with YMCA child care and NC Division of Child Development guidelines at all times.
Introductory Period:
A 90-day review will be conducted after the employee start date. The purpose of such an initial introductory period is to provide an opportunity for both the YMCA of Catawba Valley and the new employee to assess their respective satisfaction and suitability to the job.
