POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. A Group Exercise Instructor for the YMCA of Coastal Carolina follows the YMCA of the USA, Health and Fitness guidelines and is responsible for planning and leading a range of group exercise/activity sessions for members in a fitness/group exercise specialty area by creating a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Instructs group exercise classes within the scope of your training.
- Arrive at least 10 minute prior to the start of class and stay after class for at least 10 minutes to prepare, build relationships with class participants and ensure the room is clean, organized, and safe.
- Welcomes, leads and instructs group fitness classes safely while demonstrating proper form and providing modifications to participants, in a friendly manner.
- Spends time (outside of regular teaching schedule) preparing for classes and comes to each class with organized routines and proper musical accommodations.
- Responsible for the cleaning, organizing, etc. of any/all group exercise equipment
- Connects with class participants by learning names, engaging in conversation and using communication methods (such as social media) to stay in touch.
- Stays abreast of new trends and continuously works to improve abilities as an instructor.
- Oversees the proper use of equipment and supplies and makes recommendations when equipment needs replaced or new supplies need to be purchased to Wellness Director.
- Accurately records your clock in and out time in addition to recording the amount of classes taught.
- Attends all mandatory staff meetings and stays up to date on mandatory certifications/trainings.
- Able to communicate to others how the YMCA supports kids, adults and families in the community.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A degree in exercise or health related field, preferred.
- Nationally Recognized Group Fitness Certification from a NCCA accredited organization (such as ACE, AFAA, ACSM) and/or Specialty Certification(Supervisor will determine if cert is acceptable)
- Current NCCA Certification(s). Examples (but not limited to): Les Mills, Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, and Cycling/Spinning, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of group fitness instruction techniques and design of classes with demonstrated ability to lead high-level fitness classes and attract high volumes of class participants.
- Availability to teach at least 1-3 classes per week(minimum)
- CPR/AED/First Aid and assigned Redwoods certifications (must be completed within 90 days of hire).
- Child Abuse Prevention supports the YMCA’s commitment to child abuse prevention by:
- Reporting any items that may provide a health or safety hazard to staff, members or guests to your supervisor
- Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to the monitoring and supervision of children
- Reporting any suspicious behavior and violation of policy and procedures to your supervisor
- Completing all child abuse prevention training as required
