POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. A Surf Camp Instructor creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while maintaining the day-to-day operations and safety involved by conducting the program and supervision of the children who participate in the YMCA Surf Camp Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Models the YMCA Mission and Values daily.
- Maintains active surveillance of program area.
- Nurtures children through purposeful programming; plans/instructs surf lesson in accordance with the YMCA guidelines and standards of training, uses activities that are intended to achieve program goals and outcomes,
- Supervises the children and all activities while maintaining appropriate child to staff ratios.
- Builds personal and meaningful relationships with participants; models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Always engages fully with all children.
- Provides and welcomes ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers about their child’s needs and progress; connects families to the Y.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the waterfront and aquatic area.
- Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
- Maintain program site and equipment. Checks the program space for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Wear the provided staff shirt and name tag while working.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state codes.
- Knows and follows all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the ‘safe-in-six model; completes all related reports as required.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
- At least 18 years of age.
- Meets educational experience qualifications. MUST be able to surf, instructional experience is preferred.
- Familiar and comfortable with ocean conditions and marine life.
- Previous experience working with children in a developmental setting preferred.
- Ability to plan, organize an implement age-appropriate/developmentally appropriate program activities.
- Current YMCA lifeguard or equivalent within 30 days of hire. Certifications include lifeguard, basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen.
- Ability to attend and successfully complete all pre-summer waterfront training.
- Assigned Redwoods and YMCA onboard trainings within 30 days of hire.

- Completing all child abuse prevention trainings as required annually by the YMCA of Coastal Carolina.
- Previous experience working with diverse populations. Ability to develop positive, authentic relationships with people from diverse backgrounds.
