BSS Instructor 7: Keith YMCA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Director of Risk Management Education and/or Assigned Branch Director and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Basic Safety Series (BSS) Instructor is responsible for teaching and coordinating operations of basic safety series training courses in accordance with YMCA of Greater Charlotte Quality Standards and YUSA guidelines.

PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide high quality instruction to all participants of YMCA of Greater Charlotte Basic Safety Series courses including Full Lifeguard BSS Courses, Day Camp Staff, and Community CPR Courses.
• Clearly and effectively communicate with all participants about curriculum and course requirements.
• Establish strong relationships/rapport with all class participants.
• Ensure all necessary teaching supplies are in stock including equipment, documentation for students and instructors, and gloves
• Complete and maintain all required documentation for each class taught including class roster with updated blended information, instructor checklist, BLS and Pediatric tests (failed and passed), Child Abuse Prevention signed by students and BSS instructor, and rate your program, submitting documentation within required timeframe.
• Ensure Safety Standard Operating Procedures are met for required documentation and tracking.
• Arrive for class a minimum of 45 minutes prior to scheduled class time.
• Additional duties as assigned by Supervisor.

REQUIREMENTS:

• High school diploma, or equivalent
• Minimum 21 years of age
• At least 5 years of experience of teaching CPR and Basic First Aid or relevant teaching experience.
• Minimum of 3 years of experience with YMCA or similar organization
• Current CPR Instructor Certification, Lifeguard Instructor Certification, YMCA Facilitations Skills Course Certification, Teaching License or equivalent certification.
• Obtain proficiency in American Safety and Health Institute platform within 60 days of hire.
• Willing to travel to teach at local branches.
• Attends annual BSS Instructor Metrowide.
• Current status in the following certifications, to be renewed annually: Professional Level CPR, First Aid, Automatic External Defibrillator (AED)
• Must complete the following trainings before working first shift and are to be renewed annually:  Emergency Oxygen Administration, Blood Borne Pathogens and Child Abuse Prevention.
• Must successfully administer at two full BSS In-person courses under the direct supervision of a Lead BSS Instructor or an experienced instructor before leading a class independently.
• Must present a professional, mature image, and have excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Must demonstrate the ability to teach BSS curriculum and the development of basic decision making skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
• Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
• Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
• Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
• Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
• Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
• Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
• Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
• Ability to work irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends on occasion.
• Ability to teach one class a month minimum.
• Fluent in English, written and verbal communication.
