What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bus Driver Specialist: Stratford Richardson YMCA position at YMCA of Greater Charlotte?
Under the direction of the Senior Program Director, or his/her designate, and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA in cooperation with other YMCA staff, the Bus Driver Specialist I will be directly responsible for the safety and supervision of participants while being transported on a 72 passenger YMCA of Greater Charlotte bus or a 16 passenger minibus.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide a safe means of transportation for YMCA programs group on a 72 passenger bus or 16 passenger minibus.
- Assist in the maintenance and general care of buses through accurate record keeping, cleaning and routine quality checks before leaving YMCA property.
- Responsible for daily attendance keeping of participants on bus and adherence to all YMCA and Transportation guidelines.
- Provide an enjoyable experience for each participant.
- Set a good example in promptness, manners, language, appearance and health.
- Directly responsible for the safe transporting, supervision and management of children while on a YMCA of Greater Charlotte bus.
- Assist in the care and cleanliness of buses and proactively checking bus for readiness prior to transporting individuals including oil changes and maintenance as needed.
- Keep daily attendance records of participants transported on bus.
- Communicate with supervisor concerning participant needs, bus maintenance and all other problematic areas within transportation.
- Maintain vehicle logs, which include but are not limited to daily and weekly inspections, mileage, and routine maintenance and cleaning.
- Attend all staff meetings as required.
- Maintain positive relationships, open communication with YMCA personnel, participants, administration and volunteers.
- Manage appropriate behavior with all children and implement the YMCA discipline policy when necessary.
- Uphold the YMCA of Greater Charlotte goals and objectives.
- Assume any other duties as assigned by the YMCA administration.
REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Motor Vehicles and Greater Charlotte YMCA Driving Qualifications:
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must have a Valid State CDL (Commercial Driver’s License), Class A or B with a P and S endorsement.
- Minimum of six months driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle
- Enroll in a three day bus driver training class provided by the DMV
- Pass all required knowledge tests with 80% or better
- Schedule behind the wheel training with a Driver Education Specialist (DES). Pass skills test.
- Interest in children and significant evidence of emotional maturity, good moral character, judgment, integrity and leadership capability.
- Must complete proper driver background check (MVR, driver violations policy, driver information form) and pass the YMCA of Greater Charlotte driving requirements.*listed below.
- Ability to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.
- Must have strong decision making skills, versatility, and initiative, able to multi-task and have strong human relation skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate in a positive manner with members, participants and staff.
*The YMCA of Greater Charlotte requires all applicants to complete the following prior to their first day of driving:
- Approval from the candidate for the YMCA to check their MVR. (Motor Vehicle Record)
- Completion of the Redwoods Defensive Driving online training course
- Behind the Wheel (BTW) training yearly. Year two is a ride along.
- Basic Safety Series certification and all trainings and certifications in accordance with the pre-employment standards for all new hires.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to be flexible and work irregular work hours.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
- Must be able to lift and/or assist children up to 50 pounds in weight.
- Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
- Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
- Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
- Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
