The Summer Waterfront Boat Driver is responsible for the safe operation and navigation of motorized
boats to support YMCA lakefront programs, including water sports, sailing lessons, camp activities, and
emergency response. This role ensures all passengers and participants experience a safe, enjoyable, and well-supervised time on the water while upholding YMCA safety standards and policies.

Essential Functions:
• Operate motorized boats safely and efficiently for camp activities, water sports, and program
support.
• Monitor water conditions, weather, and participant safety, adjusting activities as necessary.
• Assist in water rescues and emergency response when necessary to ensure participant safety.
• Transport participants, staff, and equipment across the lake as needed for programs and events.
• Perform routine maintenance and safety checks on boats, motors, and lakefront equipment.
• Ensure compliance with YMCA and local boating regulations to maintain a safe aquatic
environment.
• Support lakefront staff with waterfront activities, dock management, and program coordination.
• Provide clear instructions and enforce safety policies to all passengers and participants.
• Assist with launching, docking, and securing boats, ensuring proper care and storage.
• Uphold and promote the YMCA’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
• Summer seasonal positions typically run May through September.
Performs other duties and tasks as assigned by leadership.
Required Qualifications:
• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application and hold a High School Diploma or
GED.
• Minimum 1 year experience operating motorized boats, preferably in a recreational or instructional
setting.
• Valid State of North Carolina Driver’s License and Boat License.
• Strong knowledge of boating safety, navigation, and emergency procedures.
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively in water-related emergencies.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills to interact with participants and staff.
• Must be comfortable working in deep water and able to assist with lakefront activities.
• Familiarity with boat maintenance, fueling, and basic repairs preferred.
• Ability to enforce safety rules professionally while maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
• Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills in changing lakefront conditions.
• Passion for boating, water safety, and outdoor recreation.
All YMCA team members are expected to maintain a current and active status for all safety, risk, and
programming certifications defined by the YMCA of Greater Charlotte.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Current lifeguard certification or willingness to obtain after hire.
Working Conditions:
• Outdoor lakefront environment, with exposure to sun, wind, and varying weather conditions.
• Physically active role requiring standing, lifting, and operating boats for extended periods.
• Frequent interaction with campers, staff, and families in a dynamic setting.
• Exposure to lake water, fuel, and boating equipment.
• Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and assist with boat launching and docking.
• Work schedule includes weekends, holidays, and extended hours during peak programming.
