Waterfront Lead: Lake Norman YMCA

Under the supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator and consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA, the Waterfront Lead will be responsible for providing leadership to the strategy and execution of waterfront operations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and implement a waterfront program including canoeing, kayaking, standup paddle boarding, fishing, and swimming.
  • Support with training, supervising, and scheduling lakefront lifeguards, including weekly in-services for lifeguards
  • Train seasonal staff and campers in proper waterfront procedures and practices
  • Coordinate all waterfront rescue procedures in accordance with the Waterfront Emergency Action Plan and industry standards.
  • Check and appropriately log equipment and coordinate repairs as needed
  • Immediately report any safety, health, or equipment maintenance problems to the Aquatic Coordinator and Associate Executive Director upon discovery.
  • Maintain inventory of necessary equipment/supplies and inform direct supervisor of needed supplies in a timely fashion.
  • Act as a positive role model for campers and other staff, demonstrating the values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility in the performance of job duties.
  • Prepare for, assist in leading, and actively participate in staff training and staff meetings.
  • Participate in and lead waterfront emergency drills as directed.
  • Facilitate regular buddy checks to ensure the safety of swimmers.
  • Will work weekends as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous waterfront or pool experience as a lifeguard
  • Prior experience with youth or family programming
  • Strong decision making skills, versatility, and initiative.
  • Able to multi-task and have strong human relation skills.
  • Desire to learn and apply experiences as necessary.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to be able to communicate in a positive manner with members, participants and staff.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

YMCA Lifeguard Certification American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification OR ability to obtain upon hire

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work irregular work hours, including nights and weekends.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
  • Ability to view/enter data for long periods of time.
