Position Summary:
To further the mission of the YMCA by preventing emergencies before they happen, recognizing and responding to emergencies that occur in the Michiana Family YMCA and upholding all rules and regulations in your area of responsibility.
Qualifications:
- Must be 16 years of age or older.
· Ability to relate to and interact with youth and adults in a positive manner.
· Capable of being assertive work-oriented and focused.
· Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification (or equivalent), including First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED training. American Red Cross Delivering Emergency Oxygen certificate required within three (3) months of employment.
· Understands the mission of the YMCA.
Experience:
· Six months to one year lifeguarding experience preferred.
Specific Responsibilities:
1. Acts in accordance with YMCA Core Values (Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility) at all times, in all job functions, and ensures that these values are maintained by members and staff.
2. Welcoming to all new and existing members and guests. Develops positive relationships and offers support; whether with questions about the pool or other programs in the YMCA.
3. Attends and participates in one in-service per month, mandatory Y staff meetings and pursues self-development that enhances job performance (Water Safety Instructor, LG instructor, etc.).
4. Effectively maintains cleanliness of pool area and upkeep of deck at all times.
5. Maintains the daily stat sheet as trained.
6. Leads with a professional appearance by being well-groomed and complying to dress code.
7. Enforce all pool rules in a clear, non-discriminatory, and consistent manner to all members and visitors. Always striving to maintain a safe environment.
8. Recognizes and effectively responds to all aquatic emergencies and offers support to other departments as needed in emergency situations.
9. Provides appropriate care according to the standards. Completes and submits the incident/accident reports immediately and properly.
10. Review and test knowledge of YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures (emergency and safety) to ensure compliance, including (but not limited to) knowing and following the Emergency Action Plan for your facility and any other facility you may work in while a member of the YMCA staff.
11. Keeps constant surveillance over all persons in your care and demonstrates the ability to remain alert, hear noises, distinguish distress signals, and scan the entire pool with clear vision every 10 seconds.
12. Records chemical readings at scheduled times, communicating when appropriate to the Aquatic Director when chemical readings or temperatures are not within required parameters.
13. Reports any property damages or repairs needed to the Aquatic Director and/or Maintenance Department, and takes initiative to learn simple pool maintenance skills.
14. Able to communicate to others how the YMCA supports kids, adults and families in the community.

· Ability to swim and perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for water rescues.
· Reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
· Duties require occasional lifting and/or moving up to 40 pounds.
· Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, and the ability to see and hear patrons in the pool.
· Change mode of lifeguarding (sitting, standing, and walking) every five minutes.
