This is a Seasonal Position
$325/week
Under direction of the Camp Director, the Junior Counselor will be responsible for the supervision, programming and safety of campers assigned to their group. These staff members will rotate between Day, Sailing, and Traditional Camp based on their qualifications and the needs of the camp. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for the supervision, programming and safety of campers assigned to their group.
- Rotate between Traditional Overnight Camp, Sailing Camp and Day Camp
- Take accurate daily attendance for respective group(s).
- Keep accurate, detailed records of incident reports and other necessary documentation.
- Give assistance to the Village Head and Activity Area Specialties with planning, development and implementation of quality camp and unit programming.
- Assist Program Specialists in presenting their programming to each group.
- Provide a safe environment and program for all participants.
- Familiar with and carries out emergency procedures, building rules and regulations.
- Provide guidance to campers in daily living skills, with special attention to Camper personal interactions with respect to others; Camper participation in all camp activities; Camper personal growth, self-confidence and independence.
- Attend all required trainings and meetings.
- All other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be at least 16 years of age.
- Must have experience with camp and working with school age children.
- Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer required; certifications must be valid/current before the first day of staff training and throughout the duration of your seasonal employment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and transport equipment from one location to another.
- Ability to visibly observe children.
- Ability to stand and move around camp for an extended period of time.
- Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
- Ability to hear distress signals even when distracted by noise and activity.
- Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity.
