What are the responsibilities and job description for the Early Childhood Education - Assistant Teacher position at YMCA OF GREATER SPRINGFIELD INC?
Under the direction of the Education Center Director is responsible for maintaining a warm, healthy environment to promote the total growth and well-being of the children in the program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist the Lead Teacher in teaching, role modeling and functioning of the classroom.
- Planning and implementation of a safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate curriculum in accordance with State Core Competencies, Early Learning Framework and Big Day Curriculum.
- Maintain strong relationships with each child assuring supports are in place as they become increasingly competent and independent.
- Monitor ongoing progress of children through observation, portfolios and assessments using Teaching Strategies GOLD.
- Maintain visual and auditory supervision of children at all times to ensure their safety in the classroom, playground and/or field trips.
- Guidance and involvement in center activities as needed and
- Has the ability to work well as a member of a team, with others in the classroom as well as the program.
- Plan and attend four (4) parents’ conference meetings a year or, on an as needed basis to establish positive and productive relationships with children, their parents and families; encourage parents to take part in all appropriate aspects of the program; maintain both daily written and verbal communication with parents/guardians as applicable including newsletters and parent notices.
- Maintain ongoing communication with PEG partners, SPS and support staff; attend regular agency staff meetings and Professional Learning Community meetings.
- Develop a relationship with community organizations and other external individuals and organizations of influence for the agency; public relations with the community by bringing the community into the classroom; maintain and grow participation in the education programs.
- Attend training and professional development opportunities.
- Maintain adequate supplies and equipment for the classroom.
- Maintenance of children’s records, including monitoring attendance.
- Responsible for completing documentation, reports and forms; input all QRIS PQR data into system regularly.
- Prepare and plan to lead as a Teacher (in absence of the Lead Teacher), this includes responsibility, guidance and direction of teaching and behavior management techniques of other classroom teaching staff, as well as guidance of other auxiliary personnel assigned to the classroom (volunteers, interns, foster grandparents, student teachers, etc.).

QUALIFICATIONS:
2-3 years of experience in an infant & toddler preschool educational setting.
Knowledge of appropriate behavior development techniques.
An ability to work with a diverse population and exhibit core YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
Excellent relationship building skills.
Current Infant/Toddler Preschool Certification.
First Aid, CPR Certification.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit, stand, stoop, crawl, kneel and bend or reach for long period of times; move around the work environment independently; communicate via computer, multi-line and smartphone. Push, pull or lift up to 25 pounds for short periods of time. Employee is exposed to noise and fluctuating temperatures.
