JOB TITLE: Head Lifeguard
REPORTS TO: Aquatics Director
FLSA TYPE: Non-Exempt
JOB PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervision of aquatic related personnel and ensuring the control and safety of participants during recreational, fitness, and instructional swimming. Works with Aquatics Director in implementing new programs and trainings as necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (not a complete list):
- Maintains all necessary skills to be certified as a lifeguard, models behavior and supervises other guards.
- When guarding or monitoring others, ensures active surveillance of the pool area, scanning and zone coverage.
- Assists Aquatics Director with assigned programs, enforcing standards and monitoring quality.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures; completes related reports as required.
- Understands and implements all emergency drills as needed.
- Responds to challenges with possible solutions in a timely manner.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code including attendance, chemical readings, incident reports, etc.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Performs chemical tests and maintenance duties as scheduled and with proper certification. Reporting problems/hazards with facility and equipment to Aquatics Director.
- Maintain pool area including cleaning, equipment, security, etc.
- Consistently communicate with Aquatics Director regarding cleanliness and safety of pool area.
- Enforce all pool rules and policies to ensure the safety of our members and guests.
- Must deal with emergency situations and rescues.
- Attends or assists with staff meetings and training courses as scheduled.
- Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures regarding the prevention of abuse.
- Report any suspected abuse, neglect, or misconduct immediately to the appropriate supervisory staff.
- Attend mandatory training on abuse prevention, including recognizing signs of abuse, and reporting requirements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required:
- Must be 18 or older.
- Must have 2-3 years of lifeguarding experience.
- Lifeguard Certification (YMCA or Red Cross- will provide upon hire)
- CPO Certification or must obtain within 90 days
- Supervisory experience.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must have the physical endurance to sit for extended periods of time, perform aerobic activity, and perform a rescue.
- Gives and receives detailed instructions.
- Must have ability to observe participant activities to enforce safety regulations and to apply appropriate policies and procedures.
- Must possess auditory and verbal capabilities to effectively communicate with swimmers, observers and staff.
- Must pass a swim and skills test annually.
- Must demonstrate maturity and ability to relate to children and adults from all socioeconomic segments of the community.
Preferred:
- Lifeguard Instructor Certification
- Bilingual English and Spanish
