HOURS: 1-2 nights per week after 6pm
PAY: $13-15/hour
POSITION SUMMARY
The Chess instructor is responsible for creating the chess curriculum that teaches critical and strategic thinking, understanding of cause and effect, planning for different outcomes, patience and focus, self-esteem, and good sportsmanship. This instructor will provide Chess classes for ages 6 through adult. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Teach the fundamentals of chess and basic tactics, strategies, and techniques to medium-sized classes from ages 6 through adult.
- Instruct classes for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players by following the instructor's created chess curriculum.
- Teach students in a fun and engaging way.
- Maintain accurate attendance records.
- Ensure strategic objectives are being met.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory authority over employees but is responsible for supervising all participants while participating in the program.

QUALIFICATIONS

- 6 months related experience or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Related experience must include knowing the rules and how to play the game of chess, prior experience working with children, experience managing a classroom and creating lesson plans, and demonstrated customer service and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write curriculum and correspondence. Ability to provide detailed instructions regarding Chess techniques.
- Ability to communicate with all socio-economic levels present in the community. Ability to interact effectively with children, parents and co-workers. Ability to be flexible with the changing needs of the program and community. Ability to mediate and resolve conflict between participants.
- The incumbent will occasionally need to stand, walk or sit, and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. They must regularly use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The incumbent in the position must occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities needed for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
- Certifications: CPR/AED, First Aid, Blood borne pathogen training required after hire and must remain current.
