The Greensburg YMCA Summer Adventure Camp is seeking fun, energetic, and enthusiastic Assistant Summer Camp Counselors to create an unforgettable experience for children in our community. The Assistant Counselor plays a key role in supporting the camp team by ensuring a safe, engaging, and positive environment for all campers. This position is ideal for individuals who love working with children, are team-oriented, and are eager to contribute to a meaningful summer experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Program Support & Implementation:

• Assist in planning, organizing, and leading exciting and developmentally appropriate camp activities, including crafts, sports, games, and team-building exercises.
• Help facilitate special events, swimming sessions, and field trips, ensuring all campers are engaged and having fun.
• Act as a role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, responsibility, and inclusivity in all camp activities.

Camper Supervision & Safety:

• Provide direct supervision of campers, ensuring their well-being, safety, and enjoyment throughout the day.
• Assist in managing camper behavior using positive reinforcement and YMCA behavior management policies.
• Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies, following YMCA health, safety, and risk management procedures.
• Maintain accurate attendance records, health concerns, and incident reports as needed.

Staff Collaboration & Communication:

• Work closely with Head Counselors and camp leadership to execute daily programming and logistics.
• Communicate effectively with fellow staff, parents, and guardians regarding camper needs, progress, and any concerns.
• Support fellow counselors by assisting with group transitions, problem-solving, and activity execution.

Other Responsibilities:

• Assist with daily set-up and clean-up of camp areas.
• Participate in required staff training, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
• Uphold and promote the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications

  To qualify as an Assistant Summer Camp Counselor for the Summer Adventure Camp at the Greensburg YMCA, candidates must meet one of the following education and experience requirements, as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS):

  (Must Meet One of the Following)

  1️⃣ High School Diploma or GED and 15–30 Early Childhood Education (ECE) credits from an accredited college or university and at least one year (1,250 clock hours) of experience working with children.

  2️⃣ High School Diploma or GED and at least two years (2,500 clock hours) of experience working with children.

  Additional Requirements

  ✔️ Must be at least 18 years old.
  ✔️ Must obtain and maintain PA state-mandated clearances, including:

• PA Criminal Background Check (Act 33)
• PA Child Abuse Clearance (Act 34)
• FBI Fingerprinting & Sex Offender Registry Clearance
  ✔️ Must provide a physical exam and TB test completed within 12 months of hire.
  ✔️ Must provide two letters of recommendation.
  ✔️ Ability to positively engage and interact with children in a structured program setting.
  ✔️ Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  ✔️ Ability to assist in implementing age-appropriate activities that promote positive youth development.
