The Greensburg YMCA Summer Adventure Camp is seeking a passionate and energetic Summer Camp Lead Counselor to provide leadership, supervision, and mentorship to campers and fellow counselors. The Lead Counselor is responsible for ensuring a fun, safe, and engaging environment while guiding children through daily activities, fostering positive relationships, and upholding the mission and values of the YMCA.
Key Responsibilities:
Program Leadership & Implementation:
- Lead and oversee the daily camp schedule, including activities, special events, swimming, and field trips.
- Facilitate a variety of recreational, educational, and team-building activities that align with weekly camp themes.
- Act as a role model, demonstrating enthusiasm, responsibility, and inclusivity in all camp activities.
- Ensure all activities are developmentally appropriate, engaging, and promote a positive camp culture.
Camper Supervision & Safety:
- Provide direct supervision of a group of campers, ensuring their safety, well-being, and enjoyment throughout the day.
- Manage camper behavior using positive reinforcement techniques, redirection, and YMCA behavior management policies.
- Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies, following YMCA procedures for health, safety, and risk management.
- Maintain accurate attendance records, health concerns, and incident reports as needed.
Staff Leadership & Collaboration:
- Support and mentor fellow counselors, providing guidance and assistance to ensure a successful camp experience.
- Work collaboratively with the Director of School-Age Programs, School-Age Program Coordinator, and other camp staff to execute camp programming and logistics.
- Communicate effectively with camp staff, parents, and guardians regarding camper needs, progress, and any concerns.
Other Responsibilities:
- Assist in setting up and cleaning up camp areas daily.
- Participate in required staff training, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
- Uphold and promote the core values of the YMCA: Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director.

Qualifications
Job Qualifications (Per Pennsylvania DHS Requirements)
To qualify as a Summer Camp Head Counselor for the Summer Adventure Camp at the Greensburg YMCA, candidates must meet one of the following educational and experience requirements as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS):
Minimum Qualifications (Must Meet One of the Following)
1️⃣ Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field.
2️⃣ Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university, including at least 30 credits in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field, and one year of experience working with children.
3️⃣ Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field, and two years of experience working with children.
4️⃣ Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university, including at least 30 credits in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field, and three years of experience working with children.
5️⃣ At least 60 college credits from an accredited college or university, including at least 15 credits in early childhood education, child development, special education, elementary education, or human services field, and four years of experience working with children.
Additional Requirements
✔️ Must be at least 18 years old.
✔️ Must obtain and maintain PA state-mandated clearances (PA Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Fingerprinting).
✔️ Completion of PA DHS-mandated training within the required timeframe.
✔️ Must have or obtain Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and Mandated Reporter Training (training provided if needed).
✔️ Ability to supervise, engage, and positively interact with children in a structured program setting.
✔️ Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
✔️ Ability to implement age-appropriate activities and curriculum that promote positive youth development.
✔️ Ability to work collaboratively with program staff, families, and YMCA leadership.
