GENERAL FUNCTION:
Manage outdoor aquatic areas. Manage and supervises guards to ensure safe swimming conditions in the pool, on deck, and locker rooms/bathrooms. Work with the Manager to ensure the pool hours are covered. Maintains accurate records and proper pool chemicals. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. This is a seasonal full-time position.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
· Minimum age of 17.
· Certifications: American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and Basic First Aid.
· Current American Red Cross Lifeguard.
· Certified Pool Operator.
· Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
· Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
· Must be available days, evenings, and weekends.
· Must be available to work a minimum of two weekends per month.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Must have the ability to make good decisions and exercise mature judgment.
· Must have the ability to lead and motivate others, able to communicate effectively with members and staff.
· Interfaces with members regarding concerns, problems, or any other issues. Provides input and positive feedback while responding to concerns.
· Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
· Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with American Red Cross and YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
· Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants, and staff.
· Knows, understands, and consistently enforces safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area
· No cellphones, smart watches, earbuds, or other smart devices are permitted during shifts.
· Performs chemical testing. Maintains accurate records as required by the Health Department.
· Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
· Add chemicals to pool on as needed basis.
· Checks the pool for and recognizes hazardous conditions. Proactively addresses safety issues or concerns.
· Helps set up and take down for special functions.
· Ensures that pool and aquatic area are clean after special functions.
· Attending all staff meetings, Mandatory in-service training, and Redwood’s training.
· Be able to administer swim test to patrons to determine the level of swim and record it.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including in the water and deck areas.
· Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
· Ability to see clearly up to 50 feet.
· Lift or move up to 50 pounds.
· Swim 1200 yds a month.
· Retrieval of the Brick off the bottom of the pool.
