Job Summary:
We are seeking dedicated and responsible individuals to join our team as Lifeguards at the YMCA. Lifeguards play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of swimmers and maintaining a secure aquatic environment. This position requires strong swimming skills, quick decision-making abilities, excellent communication skills, and the commitment to always be in an appropriate uniform. Lifeguards are also required to swim a minimum of 500 yards per week (which must be signed off) work a minimum of 12 hours a week (with a workweek defined from Sunday to Sunday) and ensure that they work their scheduled shifts or have them covered (one uncovered shift allotted absence a month).
Responsibilities:
1. Surveillance: Monitor swimmers in the pool or at designated water areas to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies promptly. At no time should a lifeguard be using an electronic device while they are actively surveying the pool.
2. Water Rescue: Perform water rescues as needed, following established safety protocols and procedures.
3. First Aid: Administer first aid and CPR when necessary and provide care to injured or distressed swimmers.
4. Rule Enforcement: Enforce pool rules and regulations to maintain a safe and orderly environment, while educating patrons on safety guidelines.
5. Reporting: Document and report all incidents, accidents, and rule violations to the appropriate authorities.
6. Public Relations: Maintain a friendly and professional demeanor when interacting with pool visitors and providing information about pool policies and procedures.
7. Team Collaboration: Work closely with other lifeguards and pool staff to ensure seamless operation and swift response to emergencies.
8. Emergency Preparedness: Participate in monthly Inservice training sessions to stay updated on lifesaving techniques, water safety, and emergency procedures. And have adequate knowledge of EAP’s for the YMCA.
9. Cleanliness: Assist with maintaining a clean and organized pool area, including the pool deck and restrooms.
10. Pool Closure: Assist with pool opening and closing procedures, including cleaning, covering, and securing the pool area.
11. Customer Service: Provide excellent customer service to swimmers and guests, addressing their questions and concerns courteously.
12. Mission Advancement: Accepts and demonstrates the Y's values. Demonstrates a desire to serve others and fulfill community needs.

Qualifications:
1. Lifeguard Certification: Must possess a current lifeguard certification from a recognized organization, including CPR and First Aid training.
2. Strong Swimming Skills: Proficient in swimming, with the ability to swim long distances and retrieve objects from the water, including a 10 pound weight from a depth of 12 feet.
3. Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit and capable of performing water rescues and providing first aid in emergency situations. Subject to random review and unannounced rescue drills.
4. Communication Skills: Excellent verbal communication skills to interact with the public and fellow staff members effectively.
5. Problem Solving: Quick decision-making skills to assess and respond to emergencies efficiently.
6. Team Player: Ability to work collaboratively with a team and follow instructions from supervisors.
7. Customer Focus: Dedication to ensuring the safety and satisfaction of pool visitors.
8. Availability: Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.
9. Age Requirement: Typically, lifeguards must be at least 16 years old.
10. Appropriate Uniform: Must wear the designated lifeguard uniform consistently while on duty.
11. Swim Requirement: Lifeguards must swim a minimum of 500 yards per week, with swim logs signed off by a supervisor.
12. Minimum Work Hours: Lifeguards are expected to work a minimum of 12 hours per week, with the workweek defined from Sunday to Sunday. This specifically needs to be met within a quarterly period.
13. Shift Coverage: Lifeguards are responsible for covering their own shifts.
14. Attire Coverage: Uniform shirts will be provided and must be worn on duty.
AM shift does also get an additional $1.75 per hour for working from 4am-8am
