Job Title: Summer Day Camp Counselor
Status: Part-time/Seasonal Salary: $13.50/hour

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Summer Camp Counselor at the McCook YMCA maintains a supportive, positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals, promotes the potential of all youth, and provides a quality experience to both youth and their families for the McCook YMCA Day Camp. This position will work part-time within the time frame between the hours of 7:15am-5:30pm.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervise and monitor the safety of children and group activities.
- Encourage appropriate behavior through positive reinforcement and/or redirection.
- Creates a positive rapport and shared interest with all youth; models relationship-building skills in all interactions.
- Ensure a clean and safe environment is provided for all program participants. Responsible for care of all equipment and supplies.
- Lead and actively participate in activities and games with children. Encourage youth participation.
- Provides opportunities for youth to lead, problem-solve, and make decisions and choices within the program and provides daily opportunities for youth to reflect on and respond to their experiences.
- Attends and participates in program activities, staff meetings, and staff training.
- Other duties as deemed necessary by the Youth Development Director.
REQUIREMENTS:
- 16 years old or older.
- Available to work Summer Day Camp dates, May 27 through August 1. Training will be held during the week of May 19-23. Management is flexible.
- Must be able to stand, remain outdoors and maintain continued physical endurance for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
- Must be mentally alert and be able to process and follow directions. Watch, listen, and facilitate group activities.
- Must be able to supervise and instruct large groups of children.
- Integrity and ability to work independently with attention to detail required.
- Demonstrated leadership and dependability.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Operation of 12-person passenger van for transportation purposes. (18 and older only)
- Background checks will be performed.
- CPR and First Aid preferred. CPR and First Aid certification required to be completed by the first day of Summer Day Camp.
- Prior experience working with children preferred.
