GENERAL FUNCTION:Under the direction of the Wellness Coordinator/Group Exercise Coordinator, the YMCA Group Exercise Instructor will function in such a capacity as part of the YMCA Wellness department and adhere to all rules and codes of conduct set forth by the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. YMCA Group Exercise Instructors will be able to instruct aerobics and other adult fitness classes with proper exercise technique, principles, and procedures.ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:The physical ability to perform the classes they will be leading.The ability to communicate verbally to individuals and small groups.Nationally recognized Group Fitness certification (ACE, AFAA, NETA or YMCA Group Exercise Instructor Certification) must be current. CPR/AED must be currentAn understanding of exercise principles is essential as well as the ability to work with people of all ages and fitness levels.At least 6 months experience teaching group exercise classes is preferred.Must be able to perform an audition session as part of hiring process. Maintain current certifications through continuing education credits.Pay rate will be based on your level of experience and certifications.JOB SEGMENTS / RESPONSIBILITIES:Wear uniform and name tag when working.Introduce yourself at the beginning of each class.Attend all staff meetings.Announce in class all upcoming YMCA activities and events.Tailor classes to the needs of the participants.Lead the class for the benefit of the participants, not your own.Lead all classes with effectiveness, safety and members’ needs as your top priority.Teach members the proper and preferred technique for all exercises.Inform members of new information regarding training, exercise safety and effectiveness.To communicate positively with our members.Motivate them through your creativity, music, personality, energy, and enthusiasm.Be available to sub at least once a month where applicable. Be available before and after class to talk with members about physical fitness and related topics.Act as a positive, self-confident role model for the YMCA.
