What are the responsibilities and job description for the Seasonal Outdoor Education Instructor position at YMCA of Metropolitan Lansing?
General Function: Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Outdoor Education Instructor teaches classes and facilitates all aspects of school and retreat group’s stay at Mystic Lake YMCA Camp including programming and facility preparation.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise and teach all education courses for 5th and 6th grade students.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate activities that are enjoyable and age appropriate for the campers including classes such as team building, wilderness survival, archery, and more.
- Develop and implement new programs based on the State of Michigan Education Curriculum.
- Monitor general safety procedures for the entire camp.
- Plan and implement large group activities.
- Provide a positive role model for campers and fellow staff.
- Maintain a positive working relationship with the education staff.
- Work with Program Director to ensure that all program areas run efficiently.
- Oversee the cleanliness and proper storage of program areas and equipment.
- Properly complete necessary paperwork according to the schedule.
- Uphold risk management principles as set forth by the American Camp Association and the State of Michigan Licensing Bureau.
- Attend Instructor training.
- Performs other functions and duties as assigned by supervisor.

Job Requirements:
- Minimum age of 18 years.
- Desire to work with children and peers.
- Outgoing, friendly, and enthusiastic personality.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Have an interest in learning to work with children in an overnight camp setting.
- Current certification in lifeguarding (including CPR and First Aid) or willingness to be trained.
- Must demonstrate the ability to organize, update, and maintain records.
- Ability to accept constructive feedback and guidance from supervisors.
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
- Completion of YMCA trainings within a required time frame.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to: bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period of time, lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear and have visual acuity. Must be able to work in an outdoor environment.
