What are the responsibilities and job description for the Before and After School Counselor- Minisink Valley School position at YMCA of Middletown?
The YMCA of Middletown is looking for enthusiastic individuals that have a passion for working with school age children to work at our Club Kid sites located within the Minisink Valley Elementary/ Intermediate School and Otisville Elementary School. We are currently looking for individuals who are available to work our morning shift from 7:00am- 9:00am and/ or our afternoon shift from 3:00pm- 6:00pm.
Club Kid counselors must be over 18 and have at least 1 year experience working with children. Preferably looking for individuals that are education/ early childhood education majors or of a similar background. Individuals must have the ability to supervise and motivate the children in addition to leading activities. Should be creative, highly motivated and be able to work in a group setting with several children. Should also be able to communicate effectively with children, parents, and school personnel as needed. Should be able to plan, assist or implement program curriculum to include the following: homework help, crafts and games. Individuals should be flexible and able and willing to perform other tasks as needed.
Individuals should have or be willing to seek the following:
- First Aid/CPR Certification
- Must be fingerprinted and cleared through the NYS Central clearance as mandated by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services
- Must be willing to get an updated health physical and a TB test
Specific Duties:
· Provide a safe and healthy environment for the children. Ensure the safety of all children enrolled in the program by following the supervision standards in the Code of Conduct and Licensing requirements.
· Assist in taking daily attendance (daily health checks). Report any changes in behavior, attitudes or specific problems with children. Maintain constant head counts when transitioning between different areas and activities.
· Ensure that only the authorized parent/guardian or emergency contact signs a child in/out of the program and include recording time.
· Assist in planning a balanced program for Group- consisting of helping with snack, leading activities, games, crafts, outdoor and indoor team building activities, homework support, community service projects, restroom supervision and clean up as required. Integrate the YMCA’s Core Values in all program areas.
- Use positive group management techniques. Anticipate and deal with behavior problems in accordance with YMCA’s Discipline and Expulsion Policy.
- Follow YMCA protocols for dealing with First Aid and emergency situations. Complete necessary paperwork such as incident reports, medical log, etc.
· Understand the YMCA’s mission and policies related to admission, payment, accidents and incidents. Be responsible for proper care of equipment and facilities. Maintain daily staff , parent/guardian relations.
· Appropriate dress and language working with children. Display appropriate and mature behavior, serving as a role model for the children. To arrange ahead of time to have your position covered in the event you are planning time off.
· Satisfy the training hour requirements to comply with the N.Y.S Office of Children and Family Services. Attend staff meetings and bi-annual conferences as scheduled.
· Volunteer for at-least one Schools out Vacation Camp and or YMCA Special Event. Understand that the job commitment is based on a traditional school year (Sept-June) and that job location can change from one site to another at the discretion of the Program Director. Flexibility is key, your Supervisor can and will change or amend this agreement at any time. Employment is not guaranteed and is based on the needs of the Association.
