Essential Functions
- Maintains active surveillance of the pool area.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
- Enforces all pool rules and regulations promptly and professionally; notifies the appropriate staff member of any inappropriate behavior.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, guidelines and program standards for the pool and aquatics area.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the health department code.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Assists with the general maintenance and upkeep of the aquatics facility.
- Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.
- Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants.
- Actively participates in department and branch meetings and/or trainings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA and Red Cross standards
- Ability to work independently with attention to detail required
- Current Red Cross Lifeguard including first aid, CPR and AED (provided by YMCA, if needed)
- Complete trainings: YMCA cause & culture training; Aquatics-specific training; Child
Pre-Course Swim Test:
- Jump into the deep end of the pool and swim 150 yards (3 laps) freestyle, breaststroke, or sidestroke without stopping.
- Stop at the deep end and immediately tread water for 2 minutes with no hands.
- Starting from the shallow end swim down to the deep end, retrieve the 10lb brick from the bottom of 9 feet, and swim the brick back keeping the brick (your victim) above water. You have 1 minute and 40 seconds for this exercise.
Abuse Prevention Training
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community and successful clearance of background check

- Recreational environment; aquatics facility. While performing the essential functions of this job the employee must physically perform all skills of a lifeguard including but not limited to hearing noises & distress signals; seeing and observing all of assigned zone; and is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
- Intermittent use of pool to respond to safety needs and participate in in-service training.
- Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions required.
