POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Aquatics Director at Newton YMCA is responsible for the overall operations of the Aquatics Department and will ensure the safety, quality, and growth of Aquatics programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Perform excellent service to all members, staff, volunteers and guests.
2. Build relationships by using names and initiating conversations with all members, staff, volunteers and guests.
3. Communicate with supervisor, staff, members, guests, and volunteers in a clear, concise and positive manner while using Listen First skills.
4. Understands, supports and is committed to the YMCA cause and our role in the community as a leader in Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
5. Develop and implement cause-driven programming that promotes Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.
6. Actively participates in management team meetings and committees as assigned.
7. Understands, follows and demonstrates the Y Competencies listed below.
8. Play an active role in the annual campaign, recruiting campaigners and serving where needed on planning committees.
9. Work closely with the Marketing team and front desk staff on marketing/promotions to ensure consistent messaging around the Y as a cause-driven charitable organization.
10. Build a culture of philanthropy within your department by building Y ambassadors within your staff/volunteer team, building relationships, and creating a case for support (need/response/impact).
11. Work to ensure a diverse and inclusive culture at the Y.
12. Know and follow the established Human Resources and Business Services procedures of the association.
13. Responsible for assuring high standards of program quality and safety in accordance with YMCA safety and risk management policies.
14. Follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the employee handbook, director handbook, department handbook and the emergency response plan manual.
15. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop, and schedule all employees and volunteers within your department.
16. Motivate and engage your employees and volunteers to increase retention and understanding of our Cause through regular staff meetings.
17. Lead, direct and/or teach activities/classes for which employees or volunteers cannot be secured.
18. Develop your department’s annual budget; monitor and adjust as needed.
19. Complete and approve payroll for your department as outlined in the payroll guidelines.
20. Conduct annual performance reviews on all employees within your department.
21. Collaborate with other directors, YMCA’s and community groups.
22. Assure your own self-development through reading, research, and conference or training attendance.
23. Act as a positive role model while implementing YMCA character development and following the four core values of Caring, Honesty, Responsibility, and Respect.
24. Work weekend duty as needed and annual Y special events when scheduled.
25. Manage and oversight of Penguins Swim Team
26. Perform other related duties as assigned by your supervisor: Director of Operations.
27. Develop schedules for all aquatic and safety classes (Lifeguard/CPR/First Aid/AED).
28. Develop pool schedule that meets our member and programming needs.
29. Monitor all instructor/lifeguard scheduling & substitutions.
30. Recommend equipment and supply purchases.
31. Prepare and maintain accurate statistical records for use by the Branch Director, CEO, or Board of Directors.
32. See that proper steps are taken to ensure the safety of each participant engaged in pool activities. Ensure enforcement of pool rules by entire aquatic staff team.
33. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude at all times. Wear clothing that meets company dress code for different job positions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation, fitness, or a related field or equivalent aquatics experience.
- Two or more years of supervisory experience in an aquatic program and/or fitness program
- Ability to train and certify staff
- Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organization skills

- Swim coaching experience
- First Aid/CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
- LGI Instructor
- YMCA Lifeguard Instructor (Trainer)
- YMCA Swim Lesson Instructor
- CPO or AFO Certification
- Previous YMCA experience

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

- Frequently required to stand, walk, sit use hands to manipulate objects, including rescues equipment, tools and controls, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk, hear and see.
- Due to the nature of this job the Aquatics Director may encounter emergency situations where physical demands are increased and may include, leaping or jumping from a significant height, running, swimming, and the ability to visually recognize actions of participants in and around the pool including possible victims in a variety of accidents, incidents and medical emergencies.
- Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. May have to remove people of different heights and weights form the pool.
- The work environment will include humidity, water and moderate to warm water and air temperatures.

Pay: $35,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
