Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. Counselors are responsible for planning, teaching, coordinating, and carrying out daily activities related to weekly themes that fulfill the mission of the YMCA of Northwest North Carolina and our Summer Day Camp. Counselors exemplify and foster our core values of honesty, caring, respect, responsibility and faith which promote healthy youth development through strengthening campers’ spirit, mind, and body.

As a counselor in our Summer Day Camp for grades K-8, you will help campers make new friends; keep them safe both physically and mentally; build positive relationships with their families; lead large and small group games; teach reading lessons, STEM, and character development; sing songs; swim; encourage personal fitness, and lead devotions. Occasional extended and/or non-traditional hours and/or other duties may be required.
Essential Functions
Coordinates the site in accordance with YMCA guidelines, ensuring all program curriculum and materials are prepared accordingly and accessible.
Builds effective, authentic relationships with staff, students and parents; helps them connect with each other and the YMCA. Encourages parent involvement and identifies potential volunteers.
Maintains records as required (i.e. site checklist, attendance, food service, staff & student forms, etc.).
Attends staff meetings and training as scheduled. Selected candidates must be able to attend the Association Camp Training.
Follows all YMCA policies, rules, regulations, and procedures, including emergency and safety procedures. Completes discipline, incident, and accident reports as necessary.
Ensures that the site is kept organized and all supplies are put away daily. Reports damaged equipment.
Required to Participate in Aquatics Activities (Including Swimming, or Deck Supervision).
Qualifications
Must be 16 years of age
Ability to demonstrate responsibility, dependability, patience and understanding, good decision making, and receive and follow instructions
Demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Be able to sit, stand, or maintain physical activity for extended periods of time (including outside and in the pool)
Appreciate diversity and practice inclusion
Ability to attend required training and be available for a variable schedule, usually between 6:45 am and 6:00 pm, as well as event coverage on select nights and weekends
