POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatic Director and/or Coordinator, the Swim Coach builds relationships with all YMCA constituents and develops character by instructing competitive swimming skills for those who have successfully completed the swim team tryouts.

LOCATION AND HOURS:

This position requires 1.25 hours per day on weekday evenings (Monday - Thursday), and one hour on Saturday mornings. The position is at the Skyview YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. EFFECTIVELY motivates and encourages swimmers to excel. ABILITY to supervise up to 15 swimmers (ages 6-17) with control and enthusiasm while maintaining safety precautions.
  2. ABILITY to use proper technical and mechanical skills when demonstrating swimming skills and developing practice sessions.
  3. ENSURES that YMCA Aquatics Safety policies and pool operating procedures are enforced at all times. Safety of participants and employees is the single overriding objective.
  4. REPORTS to the Aquatic Director any job related concerns with participants, volunteers, members or co-workers.
  5. ACTS as a role model among swimmers, parents, staff, volunteers, and members.
  6. ATTENDS all required staff meetings and in-service trainings.
  7. MEETS with swim team parents quarterly to discuss issues pertaining to the swim team.
  8. RECORDS meeting minutes and REPORTS details to Aquatics Director.
  9. PERFORMS inventory of swim team supplies/equipment; REPORTS needs to Aquatic Director in a timely manner.
  10. ABILITY to work a flexible schedule in order to meet the needs of the YMCA Swim Team.
  11. EXEMPLIFIES exceptional customer service skills with team members, potential members and the public.
  12. REPRESENTS the YMCA in a professional manner at all times while on duty.
  13. COMMUNICATES clearly and effectively with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  14. PROVDIES activities, which support and teach the YMCA’s goals to develop character (honesty, caring, respect, and responsibility).
  15. DEVELOPS daily workouts for assigned training group(s) in coordination with Aquatics Director.
  16. MAINTAINS current certifications and PERFORMS other duties as assigned.

ABUSE RISK MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS:

  1. Adheres to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  2. Attends required abuse risk management training.
  3. Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  4. Follows mandated abuse reporting requirements.
  5. Adheres to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

Must have a minimum of 2 years of competitive swimming experience. Must be a minimum of 16 years of age with a high school diploma and meet the minimum job requirements. Preferred 4 years of competitive experience and 18 years of age.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  1. Current YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification.
  2. Current CPR for the Professional Rescuer (includes AED)
  3. First Aid Certification
  4. Oxygen Certification (within 30 days)

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  1. Must reason logically and accurately while developing good working relationships with fellow employees and the public. Must set an example that exemplifies the YMCA goals and objectives.
  2. Must be at least 18 years of age.
  3. Must successfully pass a water test consisting of lifeguard strokes and general rescue skills.
  4. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

  • Must display visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents as well as the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation.

  • Ability to adequately observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, and apply appropriate management techniques.

  • Must successfully pass a water test consisting of various strokes and general swimming skills.
