POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director, the aquatic coordinator manages the operations and programs of the aquatic department in accordance with the purposes and policies set forth by the Association.

HOURS:

This is a part-time seasonal position (20 hours per week). Hours will vary, but typically require availability Monday - Thursday in the evening, and during the day on Saturdays. The aquatic coordinator is responsible for ensuring the pool is consistently staffed. He or she may need to cover lifeguard shifts, include opening shifts, if their scheduled staff member calls out.

There may be the opportunity to work an additional 10 hours per week as a lead lifeguard.

COMPENSATION:

  • $16 - $18/ hour while working as a coordinator
  • $15/ hour while working as a lead guard

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Manages all Aquatic Programs, including but not limited to; public swim, swim instruction, and special events. Conducts swim lessons as needed. May also lifeguard, clean, vacuum pools, restrooms and surrounding areas and assist with other programs as needed.
  • Promotes aquatic safety, maintenance standards and guidelines as outlined by the YMCA while maintaining code regulations.
  • Schedules staff maintaining proper ratios at all times. Provides accurate and timely reports.
  • Reviews and evaluates the lesson enrollment, open swim attendance and services of the Aquatic Department and communicates findings to the Aquatics Director and Branch Executive Director.
  • Directs the personnel of the department in their respective responsibilities. Trains staff with safety as the overriding association objective. Implements weekly in-services during summer months. Conducts and documents routine drills.
  • Recruits, retains, and recognizes Aquatic staff and volunteers.
  • Employs non-exempt seasonal and non-seasonal staff within approved budget provisions.
  • Reviews effectiveness of employed personnel and volunteers; Observes individual performance; and appraises its effectiveness.
  • Promotes and implements character development in all curriculum, training and supervision.
  • Builds and maintains a high standard of customer service for all members.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

ABUSE RISK MANAGEMENT FUNCTIONS:

  • Follows employees and volunteers screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provides employees and volunteers with on-going supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provides employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with youth.
  • Requires employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Responds seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follows mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicates to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their consumers from abuse.
  • Reports essential abuse risk management information to their supervisor, executive director, or human resources.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Directly supervises up to 40 employees in the Aquatics Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma, some college is preferred. A minimum of three (3) years experience plus one (1) year pool management.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Certification as a YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard (required)
  • Certification as a YMCA or American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (required)
  • Certification as a YMCA or American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (preferred)
  • CPR for the professional rescuer (includes AED) Certification (required)
  • First Aid Certification (required)
  • Oxygen Certification (required)
  • Water Safety Instructor (preferred)

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
