Description
To ensure the safety, security and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the
assigned school. To assist the administrative staff with applying policies and procedures for safe
and orderly schools at the building level. Responsible for maintaining calm and deterring crime
on school property or at school-sponsored events.
This position is an armed School Safety Officer and Guardian; however, there shall be no law
enforcement authority except to the extent necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant
incident on school property.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- High school diploma (or equivalent). Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Experience or training in security related field is preferred.
- Ability to read, write, speak, and understand Standard English.
- Successful completion of initial and ongoing training/certification provided by satisfactory completion of American Red Cross Aid and Cardiopulmonary laws of Florida, as a condition of employment.
- Must obtain a State of Florida (s 790.06 Florida Statutes) concealed weapons permit and must maintain the permit throughout employment in this position.
- Must be able to successfully complete ongoing trainings, and firearm proficiency test as outlined in the Marjory Stoneman High School Public Safety Act.
- Must meet all Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office requirements to attain a Guardian appointment pursuant to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.
- Must obtain and maintain the Guardian appointment throughout employment in this position.
- Must have a valid Florida driver license.
- Must submit to and pass an initial drug test and subsequent random screenings.
- Must successfully pass a comprehensive employment background check.
- Must pass a psychological evaluation.
- Must successfully complete 144 hours of comprehensive firearms safety proficiency training during a Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission certified course conducted by the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office as outlined below:
- 80 hours firearms training
- 16 hours of instruction in precision pistol
- 8 hours of discretionary shooting instruction using approved simulator
- exercises
- 8 hours of instruction in defensive tactics
- 8 hours of instruction in active shooter or assailant scenarios
- 12 hours of instruction in legal issues
- 12 hours of a certified nationally recognized diversity training program
Performance Responsibilities:
- Uses whatever force is necessary to prevent or abate an active assailant incident.
- Immediately responds to and engages to stop the threat of an active assailant.
- Conducts perimeter and inner school checks to ensure premises are secure.
- Analyzes information and situations regarding activities that may be in violation of school policies and or an indication of possible criminal activity for the purpose of determining immediate actions and or making recommendations to ensure safety of students, staff, and the public.
- Collaborates with other school and district personnel, assigned police officers and representatives of local agencies for the purpose of preliminary inquiries into violations of school policies, providing information and/or taking action for the safety and security of school site.
- Communicates school policies and procedures to personnel, parents, and visitors for the purpose of ensuring their understanding of the potential consequences of violation.
- Investigates unusual incidents, e.g. unauthorized visitors, violent threats against students, etc., for the purpose of assisting responding law enforcement personnel, developing information necessary to assist in determining appropriate action, and or providing documentation for future reference.
- Monitors students within a variety of school environments, e.g. rest rooms, grounds, hallways, library, cafeteria, parking lots, etc., for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.
- Prepares a variety of documents, e.g. security logs, memos, letters, procedures, etc., for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and or conveying information.
- Reads and responds to email communication.
- Recommends policies, procedures and or actions to school administration for the purpose of providing information and or direction that ensure efficient provision of campus security and compliance with Rule 6a-1.0018 Florida Administrative Code (F.A.C.) School Safety Requirements and Monitoring and Alyssa’s Alert Law Section 1006.07(4)(c) Florida Statutes.
- Refers observation and incidents, e.g. injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, inappropriate social behavior, violations of rules, etc., for the purpose of communicating information to appropriate instructional and or administrative personnel, and or law enforcement for follow-up action.
- Utilizes and monitors surveillance, communications, and publicly available intelligence gathering technology.
- Operates metal detectors and conducts appropriate searches when directed to do so.
- Provides support in school and district emergency situations and participates in all school emergency drills, e.g. fire, lockdown, active shooter, hostage, etc.
- Participates in completion of annual FSSAT requirements.
- Updates and incorporates aspects of the school’s Emergency Action Plan.
- Assesses all suspected school threats, and serves as an administrative member of the school’s Threat Assessment Team and utilizes the CSTAG behavioral threat assessment instrument and collaborates with others to determine appropriate threat level response actions.
- Conduct and monitor fire drills, lock downs and other emergency procedure drills for the purpose of complying with established guidelines.
- Developing and posting emergency evacuation routes and procedures; Assigning and training all staff members in specified responsibilities to ensure prompt, safe and orderly evacuation; Identifying and reporting hazardous areas requiring corrective measures.
- Coordinate with the appropriate public safety agencies, as defined in s. 365.171, that are designated as first responders to a school’s campus to conduct a tour of such campus once every 3 years and provide recommendations related to school safety.
- Escort students, school personnel and/or visitors for the purpose of providing direction, ensuring safety and providing site security.
- Provide traffic and parking control for the purpose of maintaining efficient traffic flow and use of parking lot.
- Refer incidents including personal injuries, altercations, suspicious activities, rule violations, etc. to appropriate site personnel and/or city police for the purpose of ensuring follow-up in accordance with administrative, site security and student safety guidelines.
- Respond to a variety of situations (e.g. accidents, injuries, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking the appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.
- Respond to inquiries from students and parents regarding campus security issues for the purpose of providing information, direction and/or referral for addressing inquiry.
- Receives reports, including outside the normal school day, of suspicious or threatening behavior as reported to the FortifyFL reporting tool, local law enforcement or other means of information gathering.
- Responds to alarms and requests for assistance from local agencies regarding the school, it’s property, students, or staff including some outside the normal school day.
- Maintains a situational awareness throughout the school day of possible threats to school safety, security, or operations, both natural and manmade.
- Performs other tasks consistent with the goals and objectives of this position.

- Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the protection and safety of school personnel and students outside regular hours of operation, when deemed necessary, on or off campus and coordinates actionswith local agencies.
Record Keeping:
Maintain a variety of files and records (e.g. schedules, incident reports,
emergency drill records, after action reports, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring
the availability of information for future reference and/or audit for compliance
to established policies with regards to compliance with Rule 6a-1.0018 Florida
Administrative Code (F.A.C.) School Safety Requirements and Monitoring and
Alyssa’s Alert Law Section 1006.07(4)(c) Florida Statutes.

information
Annual Requalification:
Successfully complete ongoing training, weapon inspection, and firearm
qualification on at least an annual basis and provide documentation to the
sheriff’s office, school district, or charter school governing board, as applicable.
