POSITION SUMMARY:
A YMCA of Springfield Personal Trainer provides a safe, measurable exercise plan that is designed to meet the needs and goals of their client. The trainer will strengthen their clients engagement with the YMCA of Springfield to achieve strategic goals and strengthen community and membership engagement and must ensure that the exercise plans are aligned with the Ys cause and operate within a culture of safety and meet the needs of the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Overarching Goal: In keeping with their duty of loyalty to the Y as their employer, through their planning, actions and daily work creates and fosters an environment for clients to connect with their Y community and modify the clients personal training plans as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.
1. Must initiate fitness consultations with potential clients to inform about the benefits of working with a personal trainer and to identify the clients fitness goal, learn about pre-existing medical conditions and/or physical limitations. During the consultation the trainer will perform an assessment and/or movement screen to identify contraindications and inform about the different personal training packages the YMCA of Springfield offers.
2. Prescribes a personalized exercise plan that is safe, based on the knowledge obtained during the consultation and keeps a file of each client.
3. Completes follow up assessments at least every 6 weeks and records the results in clients training file
4. Knowledge and ability to perform body circumference and body fat analysis measurements.
5. Demonstrates appropriate and safe techniques and gives cues for correct body alignment, sets and repetitions for the established training program.
6. Implements and follows the YMCA of Springfields Exercise Protocol for Personal Training.
7. Provides consistent and ongoing feedback to the client emphasizing program accountability.
8. Must keep a log that contains list of clients and their remaining sessions.
9. Must submit a weekly log in Microsoft Teams supplying coordinator/director with all necessary information for pay roll and administration purposes.
10. Must work in wellness center or lead group ex classes, to recruit clients. Once established client base of 6 or more regularly scheduled personal training sessions have been established, wellness floor or group ex class schedules may be scaled back or removed.
11. Must enforce client policy regarding 24-hour notice of cancelation.
12. Must inform client at each session on how many sessions remain from current package purchased and once they are through half encourage to register for more.
13. Must read and acknowledge the salary administration plan and addendum to this job description and is alone responsible for informing coordinator/director if there are paragraphs in those that are not understood.

Personal Trainers Do:
Have and maintain a working knowledge of human anatomy and the concepts of functional exercise, basic nutrition, and fundamental principles of exercise science
Have an ability to design and execute individual and small group exercise fitness programs, tailored to the needs and attainable goals of the individual, apparently healthy client, in a safe and effective way
Have an understanding for the need for and importance of screening and client assessment; proficiency in conducting these evaluations initially and progressively
Have a desire to help clients reach their health and fitness goals through appropriate cardiovascular, flexibility and resistance exercise
Have an ability to motivate others in an encouraging and uplifting way towards improving their overall fitness and health
Have a dedication to maintaining personal integrity, client confidentiality and professional standards for best practice
Have as dedication to self-improvement, self-awareness, continuous learning, personal growth and development regarding personal health, fitness, and mental capacity.


Personal Trainers Do Not:
Give medical advice, physical therapy advice or attempt to make a medical diagnosis.
Provide body massage to clients, or any similar service that can be construed as inappropriate touch.
Provide nutritional or supplement advice to client but is allowed to share knowledge of basic general nutrition.
Serve as a psychological counselor to clients or become intimately involved in personal client relationships.
Have a romantic or inter-personal relationship with a client.
Push your own preferences for fitness goals on clients who do not seek out those same goals.
Allow your credentials, liability insurance and other trainer business standards/practices to lapse.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Required certifications: CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification in Personal Training or Bachelors of Exercise Science Degree.
2. 200-500 hours of accumulative actual hands on/physical experience training and any other specialist training preferred.
3. Able to work with a diverse population.
4. Ability to screen movement patterns and prescribe corrective exercises to correct and improve pattern.
5. Analyze and modify exercise progression and regression.
6. Knowledge of basic general nutrition.
7. At least one year of experience teaching group exercise classes preferred.

May require physical effort and cardiac endurance while reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, balancing, bending, leaning, kneeling, walking, and climbing.
Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, and stretch as well as: reach and lift with hands, arms, back and legs up to 45lbs required and higher weights on occasion.
The noise level in this work environment is usually loud.
