SUMMER DAY CAMP COUNSELOR - MARION YMCA & HELEN G. NASSIF YMCA (Seasonal)
Under the guidance of the Site Coordinator, the Child Care Counselor is responsible for assuring each child’s health and safety, and all aspects of the child’s experience in the YMCA Child Care program. The Child Care Counselor assists in planning, organizing, leading and supervising children ages 5-12, who are registered in the program.
DESCRIPTION
- Assist in planning, creating and maintaining a quality activity-based childcare program.
- Plan organize and lead activities for groups of youth of varying numbers.
- Administer and encourage the Character Development program principles.
- Provide excellent customer service; greet each child and parent/guardian every day.
- Keeps material and equipment in good repair, and help to maintain inventory.
- Maintain the Child Care area in a safe and clean condition, creating an atmosphere of “safety first” at all locations.
- Maintain good parent-counselor relationships.
- Participate in overall program evaluation.
- Create and maintain a harmonious, positive working relationship with fellow staff, parents, and program participants. Working during teacher in-service days and schedule no school days.
- Enforce safety rules and follow risk management guidelines.
- Record and report any problems, concerns, or questions to the proper supervisor or director.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings.
- Promote and practice parent and agency confidentiality.
- Perform all other duties assigned by the Site Coordinator, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Possesses leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Has work experience in the area of education, counseling, or child care.
- Meets the requirements set by the State of Iowa, Chapter 109.4 (3)

Minimum requirements are:
(1) demonstrate competence in working independently with children;
(2) a valid First Aid and CPR certificate for infants, children, and adults or ability to get said training; and
(3) be at least 16 years of age
(4) certification in Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting
(5) a valid universal precautions certificate (6) ability to pass a criminal record check. (7) Completed the Essentials in Child Care Trainings.
(8) Annually complete Civil Rights Training and the CACFP modules - Enjoys working and interacting with people of all types and ages, with an emphasis on children and families, modeling and utilizing the important core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Has the ability to communicate the mission, goals, and policies of the YMCA and the YMCA Child Care program to the parents and participants.
- Has the ability to exercise discretion, take initiative, and deal appropriately with confidential information.
