We are seeking an Aquatics Director to join our dynamic aquatics team at the Pleasant Hill Y. This is a full-time position, benefited and exempt, responsible for directly supervising our lifeguard, swim instructor, and water fitness teams and the oversight of the entire Aquatics department at the Pleasant Hill Y. The schedule for this position will primarily be Monday-Thursday, 10:30am-7:00pm with a 5th day scheduled based on department need and staff preference (Saturdays, 8:30am-5:00pm likely needed in beginning). The Aquatics Director must be accessible and available for emergency coverage as needed. They will be the face of our aquatics team at Pleasant Hill and interact with members on a daily basis – great interpersonal skills are a must!

The Pleasant Hill Y, a branch of the YMCA of the East Bay, is a large fitness facility with a 25-yard 5-lane lap pool. Our site is a community hub where people of all ages and abilities can find group classes, swimming, fitness coaching, new equipment, and more. Our aquatics team provides a safe and friendly environment for lap swimmers, water walkers, family swim, pool rentals, water fitness classes, and a thriving swim lesson program for students of all ages. Responsibilities for this position:

  • Hire, supervise, train, and assess lifeguard/swim instructor/water fitness staff.
  • Create lifeguard schedule for pool and provide substitute coverage as needed.
  • Create swim instructor schedule for pool and provide coverage as needed.
  • Create water fitness instructor schedule for pool and provide coverage as needed.
  • Develop and adhere to program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Develop, market, and lead ARC Lifeguard and CPR/First Aid training programs for staff and members.
  • Provide exemplary member service and ensure policies to provide quality and safe programs for all members.
  • Participate and support annual fundraising efforts.
  • Serve as a member of the branch leadership team.

 

Desired Experience/Qualifications:

  • Experience in aquatic management and managing schedules.
  • Degree from a 4-year college or university or 2-4 years related experience; or a combination of equivalent education and experience.
  • Ability to teach swim lessons and water fitness classes.
  • Ability to thrive in a high paced, flexible environment.

 

Required Certifications/Education:

ARC Lifeguarding or YMCA Lifeguarding

 

Preferred certifications (or willing to obtain upon hire):

ARC Lifeguard Instructor or YMCA Lifeguard Instructor, ARC Water Safety Instructor or YMCA Swim Instructor, ARC CPR/First Aid Instructor, and Water Fitness Instructor.

POSITION SUMMARY:

These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. Develop, organize and lead high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatics programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Direct and supervise program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establish new program activities and expand program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  2. Recruit, hire, train, develop, schedule and direct staff and volunteers as needed. Monitor and evaluate staff performance. Develop strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensure records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  3. Monitor daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  4. Conduct and ensure proper maintenance of pools. Secure and schedule pool facilities. Maintain accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  5. Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, First Aid and CPR trainings.
  6. Create and schedule swim classes, water fitness classes, and swim team practices and meets.
  7. Assist in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  8. Develop and monitor program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  9. Assist in YMCA fund raising activities and special events.
  10. Build relationships with members and respond to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.   
  11. Evaluate the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  12. Serve as a member of the branch leadership team. 
  13. Perform other duties as assigned.

MEASURE OF EFFECTIVENESS

This position has a primary impact on the YMCA's ability to provide a high quality aquatics program. Therefore, the effectiveness of the fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

1.    Budgets will be met, revenue achieved, and cash managed according to sound practices established by the Finance Department;

2.    Staff and volunteers will be recruited/hired, supervised, developed and evaluated;

3.    Participants will give positive evaluation of programs.

4.    Relationships will be developed with collaborating community partners.

5.    All programs and program areas will be safe.

QUALIFICATIONS:

·   Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent

·   Three years aquatics experience

·   One year of supervisory experience

  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid certification
  • Must be able to demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications must be accomplished within 60 days of hire
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

·   Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job
