We are seeking an energetic, outgoing organizational leader who can work to create a safe, enjoyable and positive environment where staff and members are supported and can reach their personal objectives.  Our awesome fitness staff works with a diverse population every day to promote health and wellness and support the fitness goals of all our members.

POSITION SUMMARY:

These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals, Policies and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. The Executive Director is a member of the Association leadership team and administers the total operations of branches and program areas in accordance with the provision of the Associations by‑laws.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Lead the planning, growth and operations of assigned YMCA branches and programs. Supervise the Associate Executive Director and other leadership staff and is responsible for the overall success of all assigned branches and programs.
  2. Support, articulate and demonstrate the mission, values, vision, and Association goals to employees, board members, and community.
  3. Develop and maintain strong community relationships to establish a large and active membership, support the community’s growth, and identify and engage key community leaders.
  4. Lead member engagement to ensure that a high performance, member-centric culture of outstanding service is in place, ensure employees are fully onboarded and engaged to serve the members/participants and meet or exceed retention goals.
  5. Cultivate the financial resources that support Association philanthropy goals by developing and cultivating donor/alumni relationships.
  6. Develop, implement, and manage operating plans to promote innovative program and/or membership growth. Ensure high quality capital renovation and equipment upgrades.
  7. Recruit, hire, train, and supervise staff and volunteers in assigned areas. Organize people and activities for efficiency and effectiveness; identify individual and team objectives; coach and evaluate individual performance; recommend appropriate salary actions and recognition.
  8. Responsible for staff development and identification of talent through career discussions, coaching, training programs, special courses, conferences, and staff study projects.
  9. Develop and control department budgets related to the position so that resources are devoted to top priorities and strategic objectives; responsible for revenue production to maintain a balanced budget.
  10. Ensure maintenance of the facilities and equipment of assigned branches to the highest level of safety and efficiency.
  11. Lead and develop the volunteer committees; consult and advise in the selection of board members, committee chairs and committee members; and lead volunteer development.
  12. Direct the annual Branch Support Campaign to achieve growth each year, cultivate new donors and meet or exceed budget.
  13. Serve as a member of the Association Executive Cabinet.
  14. Special projects and other duties as assigned. 

MEASURE OF EFFECTIVENESS

This position has a primary impact on the over‑all effectiveness with which the Association accomplishes its mission, goals and objectives in service to the community. The incumbent has a primary impact on the community's understanding of the total YMCA Movement. Therefore, the effectiveness of the fulfillment of this position should be measured by:

  • The interpretation of the Mission of the YMCA, its Goals and Objectives to the community, continued positive relations in the total community, and growth in terms of members and program services;
  • The sound administration of the affairs of the Branch evident in purposeful and coordinated programs, positive public relations, sound financial and administrative systems, and excellent property management;
  • Membership center is growing and in a dynamic state of evolution and improvement to meet the foremost health, wellness and community needs;
  • The development and maintenance of positive volunteer and employee relations;
  • The exercise of good judgment and competence in implementing stated needs, objectives, and interests of the YMCA as enunciated by the Board of Managers and within the latitudes of responsibilities defined by the Board of Directors.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions and to supervise program activities in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor locations
  • Must be able to work on a computer for an extended period of time
  • Must be able to travel locally and nationally for meetings, training and special events

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration/human services or equivalent experience
  • 6 years of progressive supervisory/leadership experience
  • Fiscal management; staff management and development; and volunteer development
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a highly matrixed, team environment to achieve results
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Proven record of successful program or operation management
  • Ability to think conceptually, analyze and solve problems, and demonstrate assertiveness to manage the scope and diversity of the responsibilities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job

Preferred:

  • YMCA Branch Leader certification with a strong understanding of the YMCA’s mission/vision
  • Extensive professional experience in a broad range of YMCA program positions and a proven ability in community relations
