POSITION SUMMARY :
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under general supervision of the Program Director, Cabin Counselors are expected to participate in all activities with their campers. Because of the large range of age groups, we accept at camp, counselors will work with different age groups as well as a variety of socio-economic groups each week. You will be responsible for the care, health and safety of the campers in your group. When assigned as a Cabin Counselor, you will be a role model for your campers. As such, you will be one of the most influential in determining each campers experience while at Camp Edwards.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :
- Guide cabin and individual campers in participating successfully in all aspects of camp activities.
- Connect with every camper in cabin group on a daily basis.
- Supervise and facilitate all assigned aspects of the campers' day, including but not limited to, wake-up, cabin clean-up, meal times, cabin activities, rest period, camper free time, evening activities, camp fire, and bed time.
- Prepare for and actively participate in staff training, staff meetings and any other program team meetings.
- Set a good example for campers and others including cleanliness, punctuality, sharing clean up and chores, sportsmanship, table manners, appropriate language, etc.
- Carry out established rules for supervising camper health.
- Maintain safety and enforce regulations for all campers and staff.
- Assist in maintenance and inventory of Program Area supplies.
- Participates in and leads Campfire songs and activities.
- Participates in and leads Morning Inspirational for campers.
- Services and cleans all assigned guest rooms, meeting rooms, restrooms, buildings, offices and other areas in accordance to cleaning standards.
- Effectively communicate program details, training materials and schedule changes to staff and campers.
- Create positive relationships with members, supervisor, co-workers, subordinates and the public.
- Model, practice, and carry out YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Maintain American Camping Association Standards as well as other related governing agencies in relation to particular program areas.
- Monitor and maintain the highest moral standards and values in all areas of the YMCA resident camping programs.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

Typically, camp counselors will not be scheduled to work more than 54 hours or six days in a workweek. Overtime pay will not be provided to camp counselors who work 54 hours or less in a workweek, or six days or less in a work week. Applicable overtime pay will be provided to camp counselors if they work over 54 hours in a workweek, or more than six days in a workweek
