Overview
To further the purposes of the YMCA by building relationships and developing character in all YMCA constituents, the Program Instructor - Health & Fitness [Group Fitness Instructor] - is responsible for leading both beginning and experienced exercises in safe and effective group classes. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change, to build self-esteem, and to encourage consistency.
Responsibilities
In coordination with the Program Director, the Program Instructor - Health & Fitness shall:
- Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals
- Answer questions from members to support them in achieving their goals related to healthy living
- Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members
- Build effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA
- Regularly check all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness
- Keep accurate class attendance records
- Follow YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations
- Abide by the safety, injury and illness, and prevention guidelines by taking personal responsibility for own safety and safety of program participants
Qualifications
- HS diploma or equivalent
- CPR, First Aid, AED, national certification (ACE, NETA, AFAA, NASM) in group fitness instruction or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification
- Certification in areas of expertise
- At least one year of experience teaching group wellness classes preferred
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Ability to conduct classes and activities.
- Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and carry supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
