Overview
The Wilderness Instructor position is responsible for the planning, implementing and leading wilderness trips for participants both on and off camp property. The Wilderness Instructor may live in a cabin with participants while on site.

Responsibilities
- Prepare, organize, and implement all aspects of the wilderness trips and is responsible for the general safety and supervision of participants in program.
- Provide instructions, supervision and safety of all campers in program area and cabins.
- Assist campers with achieving their goals.
- Educate participants in the various responsibilities/skills of program: camping, cooking, and safety equipment; canoeing, backpacking, etc.
- Supervise and participate in all assigned aspects of the participant’s day which includes but is not limited to: Participant check-in and check-out; meal times; teambuilding games and activities; backpacking, canoeing, swimming; reflective activities and discussions, and before/after hours duties as assigned.
- Attend and participate in approximately three weeks of training, which may include but not be limited to Wilderness First Aid, Canoe Instructor, Lifeguarding, Wilderness Trip Instructor Field Training, and parts of All-Staff Training.
Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must have a clear criminal background check and safe driving record.
- Ability to supervise and lead groups of participants.
- Possess leadership skills that can assist in encouraging and motivating participants.
- Must show enthusiasm, dedication, responsibility and maturity and have the ability to interact and communicate clearly with participants, parents and staff.
- Must have or be able to earn a valid Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certification, CPR, Lifeguarding certification, and canoe training. If necessary, training will be provided. Some exceptions to certifications may be made depending on the combination of instructors on any given trip.
