Healthy Living Director-Durham YMCA

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Associate Executive Director and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, the Healthy Living Director plans, promotes, implements, and manages a variety of wellness activities. As a member of the branch wellness team, they will work to strengthen relationships among members through wellness activities, coaching and creative programs that align with the YMCA of the Triangle long range plan. The Healthy Living Director will be responsible for managing such programs in accordance with established policies and expectations of the YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Promotes and delivers high-quality community wellness programs serving members and program participants with an intentional focus on relationships, engagement and skill development consistent with the long-range plan of the Association.

• Serves as part of the overall wellness team focusing on health and wellness, personal and small group training programs that are consistent with the YMCA mission and aimed at inclusion, diversity, and creativity.

• Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.

• Recruits and hires diverse staff across multiple dimensions of diversity. Responsible for onboarding and developing them for success through training, leading, scheduling, and evaluating to meet the needs of the community. Provides strong leadership and accountability to staff.

• Responsible for the leadership of the part-time wellness coaches and personal training staff to identify and deliver new avenues for personal and small group training within and outside the branch.

• Actively accountable for developing, staffing and promoting the new member onboarding wellness options including, Start Strong, Wellness Floor Orientations, and Middle School Orientations across the 4 Durham YMCAs.

• Regularly conducts scheduled audits of all 4 Durham branches’ wellness areas to ensure excellence in program delivery, member engagement and overall experience.

• Responsible for the oversight of equipment repair and maintenance for all wellness areas ensuring that it is working safely and efficiently; as well as the general floor and surrounding area are kept clean and tidy.

• Point person for new Cardio and Strength equipment orders and delivery at all 4 Durham branches and wellness floor layout recommendations.

• Responsible for helping lead the health and well-being initiatives at the branch. Works towards developing better systems and processes to ensure deeper connectedness among members and create an environment that supports overall health and well-being.

• Responsible for Adult Pickup Sports across all 4 Durham Branches including programming, scheduling, marketing/promoting and staffing where necessary.

• Responsible for building and implementing gym schedules and wellness options in the mobile app/Fisikal

• Assists with planning, promotion and execution of Durham Y wellness events including, triathlons, fitness challenges, health fairs, corporate offerings and other health management programs

• Has a strong all 4 Durham YMCA branches; committed to building positive, genuine relationships with members and modeling wellness floor expectations for part-time staff.

• Responsible for implementing annual budget according to guidelines.

• Facilitates high quality training opportunities for coaches and trainers including quarterly staff meetings.

• Participates in Association Wellness and Engagement initiatives. (IQ Work)

• Is a liaison for Y Health initiatives and Nutrition Health Works for the Durham branches.

• Actively serves as leadership for the Annual Campaign (We Build People). This includes but is not limited to recruiting and engaging volunteer fundraisers. Actively telling the story and mission of the YMCA in the branch and the community. Utilizing relationships to raise funds that help run YMCA programs for community outreach. Working with other fundraising team leadership to creatively engage the team throughout the year.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s degree in a health/exercise field preferred. 3-5 years of wellness experience required.

• Must have a high level of initiative, be a self-starter and have the ability to development relationships with members

• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.

• Demonstrated experience in community relations, customer service and leadership of a large group of people.

• Ability to attract, retain, lead and motivate quality staff and volunteer leadership.

• Must possess strong communication and computer literacy skills

• Must have commitment to the mission of the YMCA and uphold its values and ethics.

• Multi-lingual desired but not required.
