General Function:         Under the supervision of the Sports Director or designated supervisor, and in harmony with the mission and purpose of the established policies and goals of the YMCA of the Virginia Peninsulas, the Certified Sports Referee is responsible for officiating sports games, ensuring participants’ safety and well-being at all times.   Qualifications:   Minimum of 18 years of age. Must have at least 2 years’ experience in program area. Must have a Nationally Recognized Certification. Experience working with children in a supervised setting preferred. Certification in CPR/First Aid/AED/O2. Complete and maintain required trainings to include but not limited to: New Employee Orientation (NEO), Bloodborne Pathogens, Child Abuse Prevention (CAP), and Harassment Prevention upon hire and annually thereafter.   Essential Functions:    Support the mission, vision and goals of the YMCA. Promote a professional work environment through character development by modeling the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Lead in a manner that advances our cause to strengthen the foundations of community through programs that focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Exhibit professional appearance and behavior at all times, in appropriate official uniform. Communicate immediately with Program Director or designated staff if there is a conflict with the staff schedule. Understand that the safety of players, coaches and parents is of utmost concern. Administer rules for the appropriate sport and communicate YMCA Sports philosophy. Show up at scheduled time in order to make sure the equipment and entire playing surface is clean and safe before play (removing any possible hazards) and the coaches are ready to start on time. Build relationships with players, coaches, and parents by interacting with them before, during, and after each game. Start and end each game on time. Communicate violations and explain to players and coaches why the violation was called in a positive manner.  Assist with the transition between games to allow for ample warm-up time for each team. Follow department Platinum standards. Maintain the cleanliness of the playing field/gym and surrounding area. Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements. Promote and participate in YMCA fundraising efforts to include Annual Support and United Way Campaigns. Attend staff meetings and trainings as scheduled. Wear staff uniform and name tag, or professional attire when appropriate. Act as a leader in emergency situations. Report any accidents or incidents according to Emergency Communication Action Plan. Ensure all members, guests, and program participants are in a safe environment and actively follow center Emergency Operations Plan (EOP). Carry out other related duties as deemed necessary by the Youth and Teen Department and center operations to ensure an excellent member experience.   YMCA Competencies (Team Leader):   Engaging Community, Communication & Influence, Inclusion, Collaboration, Emotional Maturity, Critical Thinking & Decision Making, Developing Self & Others, Philanthropy   Skills and Ability Requirements:   Ability to observe children’s behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques. Ability to communicate and work with assigned ages and skill levels and provide necessary instruction to participants. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to assigned activities. Physical ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and those situations requiring first aid. Physical strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children. Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.   Effect on End Results   The membership growth and retention plan for the center is achieved. A high degree of member satisfaction is achieved as measured by Net Promoters. A positive image of the YMCA is portrayed to members, staff, volunteers and the community. A pleasant and comfortable working environment is maintained for all staff. Relationships are strengthened through intentional interactions. The facility will be safe, clean and an enjoyable place as measured by Q Checks and Risk Management Audits. Superior quality standards are met as evidenced by department standards.
