POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the guidance and supervision of the Healthy Living Director, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for leading both beginning and experienced exercises in safe and effective group classes. The goal of this program is to assist members in making a healthy lifestyle change, to build self-esteem, and to encourage consistency. The role of the Group Exercise Instructor is to assist and inspire members as they participate in Group Exercise classes. The Group Exercise Instructor is always expected to demonstrate a professional manner when in the facility, including personal time spent in the facility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Improves the health and well-being of the community that the Putnam County YMCA serves.
- Works to ensure member safety and enjoyment.
- Engages members using listen-first skills. Encourages member interaction and connections.
- Organizes and provides fun, engaging, and effective group exercise classes tailored to participant ability level/physical limitations, and focused on helping participants achieve their health and wellness goals.
- Keeps abreast of changes and trends in the fitness industry through continuing education.
- Ensures the cleanliness of facilities and equipment by making sure equipment is appropriately cleaned and put back fashionably after each class, sweeping and mopping the floor, and other duties to keep our exercise spaces in pristine condition.
- Regularly checks all equipment to ensure proper maintenance and cleanliness
- Identifies facility or equipment malfunctions or other problems and troubleshoots as capable. Promptly inform the Healthy Living Director.
- Attend departmental meetings and trainings as scheduled.
- Serves as a role model for a healthy lifestyle and superior “Expect the Best” customer service. Interprets the YMCA as a membership organization. Represents the YMCA positively and maintains a good and friendly relationship with the YMCA members and staff, addressing each by name.
- Actively participates in the Annual Campaign by attending the annual campaign meeting and educating members on the importance of YMCA programming.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience designing and implementing group exercise programs
- CPR and AED training is required before the first class is taught
- Group Fitness Instructors must be certified to lead group exercise classes and any specialty classes that they will be teaching. The YMCA of the Wabash Valley recognizes group exercise certification from YUSA, the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the American Council on Exercise (ACE), American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA), International Sports Science Associations (ISSA), National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), and National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA). Specialty certifications including but not limited to Beach Body, LLC, Pound®, Zumba®, Silver Sneakers™, and MOSSA™ are also accepted and are required to teach specialty classes.
