POSITION SUMMARY:
This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Sport League staff are responsible for officiating sports games and leading skills, drills and practices, in a way that creates both a controlled and learning environment. Creates positive, nurturing relationships with children, while building cooperative relationships with parents/caregivers. Promotes and supports the potential of all youth in programs and facilitates peer-to-peer connections as part of the overall program experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain a controlled environment where participants follows the rules of the game/sport.
- Teach children the general rules of the game/sport.
- Demonstrates specific sports skills to the participants.
- Ensure participants are active as possible during the program.
- Record, check, and enforce Equal Playing Time rule; No child sits on the bench.
- Take charge of game and all participants, coaches, spectators from start to finish.
- Arrive before scheduled start of game shift to welcome and service participants and their families.
- Develop connections with parents, resulting in the development of friendships, Y advocates and volunteers.
- Be job ready with Y issued staff uniform and whistle and clean, well-groomed appearance.
- Encourage participants in social adjustments, desirable habits and attitudes, as well as individual achievements.
- Attend all required trainings, and in-services.
- Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards. Keep area clean, neat, and organized, including courts, equipment rooms and offices.
- Report any maladjusted or criminal behavior that might damage individuals or the reputation of the leagues or Y to supervisor, including reporting any suspected child abuse.
- Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.
- Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- 16 years of age or older; one year or more of college preferred.
- Work effectively in a group as a team member with limited supervision.
- Ability to respond to emergency situations. Interpret and enforce all safety and health regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate interpersonal and communication skills, exercise sound judgement and handle conflicts in a timely and professional manner.
- Previous experience working with children preferably in a youth sports setting
- Experience and knowledge of sports/games.
- CPR, First Aid, AED certifications and Child Abuse Prevention training within 30 days of hire date.
- Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.
