Description
The Wellness Associate is responsible for meeting member needs and maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. The Wellness Associate will be responsible for answering general wellness floor questions, maintaining and cleaning equipment and fitness areas, general operations, and attending to any emergency that may occur. A high level of customer service and engagement is expected, which includes presenting a professional image and engaging members by providing motivation and encouragement. The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Birmingham are conveyed.
Essential Functions
1. Circulate through the fitness area, including the basketball gym, actively engaging members and guests.
2. Use Daxko Engage to record meaningful interactions with members.
3. Assist members using weight and cardio equipment, as needed.
4. Report repair requests and/or potential hazards of equipment to the supervisor, follow branch repair procedures, and post “out of order” signs on equipment.
5. Thoroughly clean and assess equipment and complete the cleaning checklist during each shift.
6. Promote all membership and wellness activities and special events.
7. Provide engaging, cause-driven tours to prospective members.
8. Provide EGYM orientations.
9. Make program suggestions based on interests and goals of current and prospective members.
10. Provide members with a basic wellness orientation.
11. Maintain knowledge of emergency and safety procedures, provide care in an emergency, document all incidents/accidents on the appropriate forms, and enforce safety protocols such as age requirements.
12. Attend staff meetings and training as required.
13. Other responsibilities as deemed necessary by the supervisor. The employee may be assigned to areas other than their normally assigned area as needed to meet organizational needs.
Employees and volunteers who do not directly supervise children and teens will:
• Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens.
• Attend required abuse risk management training annually.
• Report suspicious and inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
• Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
• Adhere to job-specific abuse risk management responsibilities.
Goals and Expectations
1. Attend staff meetings and in-service necessary for maintaining/increasing job knowledge.
2. Respond promptly to communication from supervisor.
3. Regularly check for schedule changes.
4. Refrain from personal cell phone/laptop/tablet use during work hours.
5. Avoid eating in member-facing areas.
6. Refrain from using headphones/earbuds during work hours.
7. Uniform Policy:
a. Black pants or shorts, designated staff shirt always visible
b. Name tags must be worn on upper right chest
8. Must work a minimum of 1 shift per week unless approved by your hiring manager.
9. All YMCA computers are used for work-related business/activities ONLY.
10. Secure a replacement if you are unable to work an assigned shift. The substitute request must be accepted and approved before the original shift holder is relieved of responsibility for the shift.
11. Maintain privacy requirements by not sharing personal information about members or co-workers including, but not limited to, phone numbers, addresses, program participation, financial information, or personal situations.
12. Go the extra mile to ensure each member’s experience at the YMCA is a pleasant one, and always look for ways to improve performance.
13. Complete training courses via staff training website within 30 days of hire.
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
1. This position requires an understanding of basic exercise terminology and equipment use.
2. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all socio-economic segments of the community.
3. The ability to adapt to change quickly and handle multiple tasks under limited supervision.
4. Flexibility to work a variety of hours including days, nights, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
5. Successful completion of background screening.
6. Acquire and maintain the following certifications: In-person First Aid/CPR/AED (valid 2 years unless otherwise noted) via YMCA, American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Health and Safety Institute.
7. Complete requisite Online Training Modules annually.
8. Ability to work with technology such as computers, computer software, tablets, etc.
Physical Demands
1. Ability to stand for extended periods of time. Shifts are typically 4-6 hours.
2. Ability to walk, stoop, kneel, push, pull, climb, and lift/carry a maximum of 50 pounds.
3. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and effectively.
4. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to member needs.
Salary : $11
