Job Summary
- Under the general direction of Engineering Management, and in accordance with strategic plans and goals of YCA, is responsible for the profitable development, leadership, and management of the engineering function within the assigned section.
- Plans and executes Supervisory and Technical duties
- May be assigned as the Lead Engineer for multiple, simultaneous projects.

- Recognized as a functional expert and thought leader, providing consultation to others in the application of engineering practices.
- Manage engineers, and/or technicians. Typical team size up to ~10.
- Forecast workload and assign team members to specific projects/tasks. Report monthly. Define remote engineering methods and promote use to minimize cost and manage peak workloads.
- Reassign team members between projects and/or engineering sections based on workload and skills.
- Manage personnel requisitions, identify candidates, and interview in accordance with Yokogawa hiring policies.
- Review/approve timesheets, expense reports, and PTO/absences. Monitor/justify/minimize overhead charges.
- Track team member skill levels (strengths and weaknesses). Prepare for and conduct performance appraisals. Identify training needs, develop training courses, and define training plans.
- Identify and resolve personal issues with support from engineering / operations management and human resources.
- Monitor project schedules and perform quality gate reviews. Ensure technical quality standards are met and that change orders are properly identified.
- Review and analyze performance metrics (KPIs) and prioritize improvement initiatives.
- Review all lessons learned results from all projects and ensure that key lessons are informed to all team members.
- Arrange for training on new product features and manage response to technical issues, including those identified in the lessons learned meetings/database.
- Design & develop System Architectures and related network drawings. Calculate Heat Dissipation and Power Consumption for various types of cabinet and consoles.
- Develop the IO database exchange mechanism and manage all the IO list information and work on the required engineering tools to take care of Nest / IO loading, wiring and marshaling assignment.
- Develop IO typical loop wiring and cabinet typical layout, including cable selection, routing and junction box design.
- Develop cabinet designs for various systems, including but not limited to DCS, SIS, Server / Networking and Marshaling.
- Develop Control Room / Rack Room designs, including console furniture designs with integrated switch, annunciator and display panels.
- Design, implement, test and commission Foundation Fieldbus / HART networks, including segment designs, segment loading, cabling solutions and field instrument selection.
- Demonstrate proficiency with reviewing designs of all aspects of a Remote Instrument Enclosure, including Structural Design, UPS, HVAC, Grounding, Fire & Gas systems, Lighting, Electrical Utilities
- Plan and execute the migration of control systems in both “on-line” (hot cutover) and “off-line” process plant scenarios.
- Design and review Electrical grounding solutions for control systems and buildings.
- Design, implement and integrate Yokogawa and vendor sub-systems including PLC packaged systems, SCADA systems, Intelligent Motor Control Relays, CCTV, Gas Chromatographs.
- Works effectively in both an individual and team environment. Typically works on multiple, simultaneous assignments.
- Provides technical and project execution consulting to Project Leads. Typically consults on multiple, simultaneous projects.
- Serves as a key technical resource for Proposals and Sales support activities such as demonstrations, preparation of prototypes, and generation of cost estimates and proposals.
- Proactively identifies technical opportunities and economic justification for control system improvements and communicates those to the customer, Project Manager and/or Sales. Able to conceive solutions which integrate Yokogawa systems, other Yokogawa products, and other vendors’ products.
- Works independently or directs a team which conducts field surveys, compiles data, designs automation functions, and prepares reports for various activities such as customer proposals, FEED studies, project design documents, etc.
- Understands and follows all Yokogawa procedures and Work Instructions that pertain to the position and work assignments. Identifies and implements methods to improve quality and efficiency through standardization and reuse.
- Develop conceptual and detailed designs and verify implementation of core Yokogawa Systems products, including DCS, SIS, SCADA and Information Management Systems. This includes the generation of system Bill of Materials and Purchase Requisitions for system hardware, software and buyout materials.
- Leads large or complex projects, including those involving advanced automation technologies. Is responsible for all technical aspects of successful project delivery, including appropriateness of hardware and electrical designs, manpower allocation and usage against budget, supervision of the project team, and meeting delivery schedule.
- Utilizing systemic thinking to solve complex problems fully understanding the effect of decisions at a department or organizational level.
- Applies and develops technical skills and provides technical expertise to projects and other initiatives.
- Proactively sets priorities related to complex situations having multi-project and/or organizational impact. Contributions are primarily technical rather than managerial. May be involved in guiding strategies.
- Seasoned ability to inform and persuade on complex matters comes from recognition as subject matter expert. Utilized on the most complex and difficult problems. Ability to communicate in both oral and written format is critical.
- Ability to coach, mentor, teach and develop others is critical.
- Ensures cooperation and interaction across diverse stakeholders both internal and external to the organization, often managing conflicting interests and/or demanding and/or projects.
- Education & Experience: BS degree in Engineering or other relevant disciplines and 12 or more years of experience. Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a technical degree.
- Qualifications: This position is recognized as a subject matter expert across the organization, and in some cases the industry, providing insight and possibly supervision to cross-functional teams. Additionally, must be able to work with internal and/or external clients in understanding their needs. The ability to effectively initiate, develop, and oversee complex ideas, design concepts, proposals, procedures, project and design reviews is considered critical for success in this role.
- Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the environment is reasonable.
