Description
The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill one (1) regular, full-time position in the class of Animal Care Attendant in the Animal Services section of the Yolo County Department of Community Services.
The Position
Under close supervision, Animal Care Attendant is a trainee classification responsible for basic duties such as feeding and caring for all housed animals and maintaining safe and sanitary kennel facilities at the Yolo County Animal Shelter.

Feed, water, and care for all impounded animals.

Clean and disinfect cages, equipment, and other areas at the shelter as necessary.

Evaluate animal temperaments; place animals in appropriate kennels within shelter facility, observe animals for signs of sickness or disease and refer to the attention of lead shelter attendant or other supervisor.

Assist with euthanizations and dispose of animals in a humane and prescribed method, handle animal carcasses.

Communicate effectively with staff and public with tact and courtesy under sometimes-stressful conditions.
- Other duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Minimum Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED certificate is required:
Experience: Six months paid or unpaid full-time experience in the care and treatment of animals is highly desirable. Examples of desirable experience are: Veterinarian technician or helper, kennel attendant, S.P.C.A. attendant, zoo attendant, 4-H or farm experience, or animal training experience.
License: Some positions in this classification may require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge of: practices, methods, and materials used in cleaning animal facilities, feeding and caring for animals, physical and behavioral characteristics of various animal species, basic symptoms of common animal diseases, occupational hazards and safety precautions of working around animals, kennel facilities and their associated equipment, techniques and policy associated with maintaining an animal shelter.
Ability to: properly feed and care for animals, notice symptoms of disease, illness or injury, properly clean and maintain kennels and cages, handle animal carcasses in various stages of decomposition, work with co-workers, staff, volunteers, and members of the general public from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds in a courteous and effective manner, read, write, and speak English at a level necessary for satisfactory job performance, carry out written and oral instructions, work safely with aggressive animals and hazardous chemicals, learn to euthanize animals in a humane manner, learn to operate equipment used in handling various types of small and large animals including livestock, reptiles and birds, safely operate County vehicles as necessary for duty performance.
