The City of York Civil Service Board oversees the examination process for the position of Police Officer. Once the examination process is complete, the City of York Civil Service Board presents passing candidates to the City for consideration of employment. The City of York Civil Service Board determines an applicant's eligibility for examination without regard to race, color, sex, creed, religion, national origin, and marital status.
The Police Officer represents the front line where agency policies and plans are translated into action. This includes the prevention, detection, and suppression of crime, preservation of law and order, and the protection of life and property. Police Officers professionally and efficiently deliver critical services to citizens whom they serve. Police Officers provide a full range of police service to the City of York. Patrol Officers are held directly responsible for handling law enforcement problems, calls for service, citizen requests, police-citizen relations, and police customer service issues. Police Officers shall be responsible for the effective and efficient performance of their duties in conformity with the policies and procedures of the department.

The selection process will include a detailed review of your application packet and the successful completion of the Board's selection process which includes but may not be limited to the following:
- Written Examination -Passing Score 70%
- Oral Examination-Passing Score 70%
- Detailed Background Investigation, including a Computer Voice Stress Analysis (CVSA)or polygraph - Pass
- Psychological Examination- Pass
- Medical Examination to include vision/hearing and drug testing - Pass
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. Identify, pursue, and arrest suspects and perpetrators of criminal acts. Patrol specific area on foot, or motorized conveyance, responding promptly to calls
for assistance. Monitor, note, report, and investigate suspicious persons and situations, safety hazards, and unusual or illegal activity in patrol area.
- Record facts to prepare reports that document incidents and activities. Review facts of incidents to determine if criminal act or statute violations were involved.
- Render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.
- Testify in court to present evidence or act as witness in traffic and criminal cases.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Required Knowledge:
To be considered for employment, applicants are obliged to fulfill the following requirements:
- Knowledge of modern principles, practices, and procedures of law enforcement
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, and administrative policies
- Knowledge of department rules and regulations
- Knowledge of the layout of the City
- Knowledge of defensive tactics and the use of force
- Skill in use of specialized weapons, equipment, and tools relevant to the functions of the position including pistol, shotgun, ASP baton, pepper spray, pepper ball gun, and less lethal munitions
- Skill in high-speed or defensive driving
- Skill in the operation of standard office equipment
- Skill in the operation of computers and various software programs
Supervisory Control:
The Police Captain, Police Lieutenant or the Police Sergeant assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
Scope and Effect:
The purpose of this position is to enforce federal, state, and local laws. Successful performance helps ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the police department and provides increased public safety for citizens and businesses of the City.
Physical Demands:
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, running, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. Pursuit situations may require significant physical agility and exposure to violence or injury
Work Environment:
The work is typically performed in a patrol car or other vehicle, office, library, computer room, or outdoors where the employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, cold or inclement weather, and dangerous situations requiring the use of physical force and sometimes the use of firearms and other weapons. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Requirements:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent required.
- No experience required for this position.
- Must be 21 years of age or older by the posting expiration date of March 29, 2025
- Must possess a valid Driver's License at the time of application.
- Must be able to perform the essential job functions of a Police Officer
