Culture & Heritage Museums is a family of museums in York County, SC, which includes Historic Brattonsville, McCelvey Center, Museum of York County, and Main Street Children’s Museum in Old Town Rock Hill. The Mission of Culture & Heritage Museums is to communicate and preserve the natural and cultural histories of the Carolina Piedmont, inspiring a lifetime of learning. Historic Brattonsville presents the history of the Scots-Irish and African-Americans in the South Carolina upcountry through preserving and interpreting the buildings and stories of the Brattonsville community. Featuring more than 30 historic structures from the 1760s to the late-19th century, the site provides visitors with an opportunity to see the evolution of Southern culture and architecture in the Carolina Piedmont. Currently, two of the Bratton family houses are closed for preservation. The purpose of this temporary position is to assist with the preservation and restoration work on the historic structures under the care of the Culture & Heritage Museums at Historic Brattonsville. The Architectural Conservation Intern will support these on-going preservation activities under the supervision of the Preservation Coordinator/Restoration Specialist. This class works under close supervision according to instructions.The schedule for this temporary internship position is Monday - Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, for $15.82 an hour.
Essential Functions:
- Assist in the preservation/restoration work on historic buildings to learn and practice preservation techniques and methods.
- Assist with activities that might include, but are not limited to:
- Building investigation and documentation;
- Carpentry and wood working;
- Masonry; and
- Materials analysis.
- Performs related work or other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent and some college.
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full-time or part-time student studying Historic Preservation or related discipline and may receive credit hours for an internship; or a recent graduate with a degree in Historic Preservation or related discipline.
Physical Demands:
- Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.
- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
- Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
