York County Fire offers residents a wide range of fire prevention and fire protection services. Employees are trained and equipped to provide fire safety inspections, fire investigations, and public fire education programs for people of all ages.

Our volunteers are crucial to the rural fire system, the department supplies the County's 16 volunteer and combination paid/volunteer fire departments with in-depth firefighting instruction at its training facility on McFarland Road in York, South Carolina. York County Department of Fire Safety is staffed with Fire Prevention Technicians, Suppression Squads, Fire Marshals, Shop Maintenance, Training and Administration.

Additionally, the department's award-winning fire truck building and maintenance program continues to earn a reputation for excellence by saving tax dollars and by providing state-of-the-art equipment.

We are excited to hire a full-time Fire Suppression Supervisor to join us in our Fire Services Department. In this critical position, you will have operational supervision and administrative oversight for fire suppression personnel, with direct responsibility for leading and supervising Firefighter II positions and related staff. This position coordinates daily shift operations, ensures operational readiness, manages scheduling and assignments, oversees training and professional development, enforces policies and procedures, and supports budgetary planning and procurement within the Fire Services Department.

Projected Hiring Rate/Pay Grade 118:  $28.42 - $34.10 per hour. Salary is dependent on qualifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Fire Suppression and Emergency Operations
Includes all essential functions of the Firefighter II classification, such as:
  • Performing fire suppression and emergency rescue activities.
  • Providing emergency medical response and support.
  • Conducting daily equipment and vehicle checks.
  • Participating in training and public outreach activities.

Supervisory and Administrative Duties
  • Supervises, evaluates, and provides leadership to assigned Firefighter Il and related personnel.
  • Creates and manages shift schedules, work assignments, and personnel rotations to ensure adequate coverage.
  • Coordinates and monitors training and professional development programs to maintain certifications and improve readiness.
  • Assists in developing, implementing, and enforcing departmental policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains documentation and reports for operational activities, personnel performance, incidents, and training.
  • Supports the Fire Services command staff in planning, preparing, and managing the department's budget, including procurement of equipment, supplies, and services.
  • Serves as a liaison between line personnel and upper-level management to ensure effective communication and operational consistency.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible fire service experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Certifications and Licenses:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Class E driver’s license (Class B preferred) with an acceptable driving history.

Physical Demands:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.

    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
    • Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
