About Solid Waste Disposal: York County Solid Waste Disposal is responsible for operating and maintaining a Solid Waste Transfer Station designed for the processing of municipal solid waste. The waste is received from municipalities and private waste haulers and loaded onto trailers for transport and disposal in an approved landfill facility in Richland County, South Carolina. The county also operates a Construction and Demolition landfill where all construction type waste meeting regulatory guidelines is disposed of in the landfill. Waste tires are also collected at the York County landfill where they are shipped to a tire processing facility for recycling. Solid Waste Disposal also accepts yard debris at the landfill facility.
The Public Works Department, Solid Waste Disposal Division is excited to hire a non-exempt Light Equipment Operator to join their team! The purpose of this position is to perform wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of the County’s landfill.Projected Hiring Range: $19.23 - $24.04 per hour. Salary is based on qualifications.
Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM with overtime available depending on department needs. Rotational Saturday work from 7:00 AM – 12:30 PM. Working on Saturday is required in this position. All Solid Waste Disposal employees are placed in rotation to work on Saturdays and average 2 Saturdays each month. Solid Waste Disposal employees are essential employees. As an essential employee, working during all inclement weather conditions is required. Meaning when county offices are closed due to inclement weather, employees are required to report to work. County employees receive paid holidays each year, Solid Waste Disposal employees observe 7 of those holidays and will work 3 of the scheduled holidays.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates a variety of light equipment, vehicles and tools; including, but not limited to mowers, blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edgers, chainsaws, pole saws, augers, concrete saws, plate compactors, rammers, lift gates, mixers, forklifts, mowers, skid steers, tractors, small excavators, and backhoes in the maintenance and construction of roads, sidewalks, landfill, facilities, collection centers, and grounds.
- Performs workplace housekeeping activities and community and roadside litter pickups.
- Performs manual labor in the maintenance and construction of roads, sidewalks, landfill, facilities, collection centers, and grounds
- Stocks vehicles and equipment with supplies and materials necessary to perform job assignments; operate, clean, service, maintain, and perform minor repair on assigned tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Responds to service calls concerning emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; performs overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain effective and efficient County services.
- Secures and partitions off work area as necessary with traffic signs, cones and barricades; flag and direct traffic around work area as necessary.
- Prepares various paperwork including completed work orders, job logs, and inspection forms
- Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of operating light equipment or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
- May be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.

- Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
- Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
- Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.

- Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
- Traffic; Moving machinery.
