About the Department: The Public Works Department is comprised of eight divisions that fall under the direction of the Public Works Director and Assistant Director. Each division provides an important service to the citizens of York County and contributes to the quality of life experienced by those who live in our county. We believe that by working together, we become empowered and are able to meet the goals set for our department. Of those eight divisions,Road Maintenance maintains roads under the County's jurisdiction, manufactures and installs street name signs and traffic control signs.
We invite you to apply to join our team as a full-time (40 hours per week), Light Equipment Operator. The purpose of this position is to perform wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance of the County’s streets and community.
Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM Or Tuesday – Friday 7:00 AM – 5:30 with occasional overtime available. Our crews work four (4) ten hour shifts per week and have 3 day weekends!!!
Projected Hiring Range: $19.23 - $23.08 an hour. Compensation is determined based on qualifications.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operates a variety of mowers, blowers, sweepers, trimmers, edger, chainsaws, pole saws, and weed eaters to maintain the parks and lawns; inspect tractor and mower for safe and proper operation; maintain equipment as needed, replacing fuel, fluids, and oil.
- Assists with repair, removal and installation of sidewalks and walkways; fills in potholes, repairs road signs, removes and repairs asphalt; and assists with forming, pouring and finishing concrete.
- Performs regular routine maintenance and service of trucks and equipment.
- Stocks vehicles with supplies and materials necessary to perform job assignments; operate, clean, service, maintain, and perform minor repair on assigned tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Responds to service calls concerning emergencies or problems on a stand-by basis; work to reduce state of emergency and correct problems; performs overtime duties as necessary or required in order to maintain effective and efficient County services.
- Secures and partitions off work area as necessary with traffic signs, cones and barricades; flag and direct traffic around work area as necessary.
- Prepares various paperwork including completed work orders, job logs, and drafts reports.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High School Graduation or GED equivalent.
- One (1) year of operating light equipment or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
- Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
Involves routine and frequent exposure to: Bright/dim light; Dust and pollen. Extreme heat and/or cold; wet or humid conditions. Extreme noise levels, animals/wildlife. Vibration; fumes and/or noxious odors; traffic; and moving machinery.
